Clever, chaotic TV writer Saoirse, glamorous, stressed-out mother of three Robyn, and dependable, inhibited carer Dara have been a tight-knit group since school. Now in their late 30s, but still as close as ever, these three friends are about to embark on the most thrilling adventure of their lives. When an email arrives, telling them about the death of the estranged fourth member of their childhood gang, a series of eerie events at her wake set them on a dark, dangerous and hilarious odyssey through Ireland and beyond as each tries to piece together the truth of the past. A show about friendship, memory and what happens when life doesn’t turn out quite like you'd expected.

Critics Consensus

Stretching its tone in different directions without ever snapping, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is another triumphantly funny and proudly Irish series from creator Lisa McGee.

What you’re really here for is the combustion between the three friends because it’s absolutely gas. Go to Full Review

All three of these main characters are just wonderful inventions. They're so funny, and they're all unique. And they're all strange in different ways that I very much enjoyed discovering. Go to Full Review

Making the meal of a season even more savory is how McGee meets her own daunting challenge. Go to Full Review

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee excels at assembling groups of female friends with great chemistry and then giving them funny things to say, a talent that carries over to her new mystery. Go to Full Review

There’s plenty of humour in it but it isn’t a comedy, and it also lays out a long trail of tragedy and pain spanning generations. You might argue that there’s a bit of redemption on offer, but then again you might not. Go to Full Review

While the storytelling occasionally drags and leans into a somewhat formulaic structure, the quick wit, dry humour and richly drawn characters make it a highly watchable binge. Go to Full Review

John S @JohnSmithReviews 9h Writing this review after watching two episodes because I’m bored already. It’s not remotely funny and very annoying most of the time. Drip feeding a story that’s pretty predictable so far. Thinks it’s way smarter than it is. Whatever happens now isn’t going to have made it worth watching two completely boring episodes. A giant disappointment after the spectacularly good Derry Girls. As always the audience score is right and critics know absolutely nothing. See more Christian M @RT77844375 2d It starts out okay (just okay) but the plot becomes excruciatingly absurd. Laughably nonsensical. And at all times the story is checking off all the required "woke" boxes. One after the other. In the most painful and obvious way. I will never watch another series of which Lisa McGee is a part. See more CHRIS M @ChrisMoore 2d Comedy? The only I laughed at was myself for watching this tedious unfocused mess. I stuck with it to see the answer of the mystery presented in the first episode. I got my answer, but by then I did not care, I was too worn down by the grating interaction of the three main characters and the bouncing around of the plot(if you can call it that!). See more Ed G @vestedinterests 2d Incoherent plot, one-note characters, constant air of self-conscious zaniness, very few actual jokes See more Craig P. @CraigPacker 3d Completely falls apart by the end. Over-plotted, needlessly complicated. Only occasionally funny. See more Marco L @decatur555 Mar 5 How to Get to Heaven from Belfast blends dark comedy, friendship and a slowly unfolding mystery in a way that feels lively and distinctive. The story follows three childhood friends who reunite after years apart, forcing them to confront old memories, unresolved tensions and a strange situation linked to their past. Much of the appeal comes from the sharp writing and the chemistry between the characters, whose conversations feel natural, chaotic and often very funny. The mystery itself sometimes becomes a little tangled, but the series keeps moving with a light, energetic tone. Belfast and the surrounding Irish landscapes add a strong sense of place, giving the story personality and atmosphere. It may not reinvent the genre, yet it remains an entertaining, witty and very watchable series driven by humor, character dynamics and a story that gradually pulls you in. See more Read all reviews
