Ash P @AshParth Jul 7 Word flew around last year, and I've seen one of the teasers for it. It was interesting as this was like a homage to old-school shonen anime or anything that's clearly like Dragon Ball. To be honest, when I've seen this, it's like I'm watching the Ultimate Muscle series since we're seeing other kinds of beings other than humans. This is an animated series that describes wrestling more, yet it feels like it's displaying MMA more. Still, this was an impressive series that shows one young woman determined to be more than what she was raised to be. The story goes that Andy, voiced by Sydney Mikayla, who lives on Accountant Island - yes, that's what it's called - and raised by her parents to be an accountant like her family for generations. Yet she wants to be a wrestler after seeing one up close, including her hero known as Quesa Poblana. Determined to become a wrestler, Andy talks to some of them as it's tax day for them, including the Perm Gang, who starts destroying her hometown because she forgot to turn in their taxes. She stands up to the Perm Gang and manages to save her hometown with the help of an old woman named Aunt P, voiced by Rolanda Watts, who is actually a retired Quesa Poblana. Thanks to her parents' understanding, Andy departs from her island and makes it to Rustburn to find Aunt P. On her journey, she meets up with Craig, voiced by Paul Castro Jr., while she keeps getting pick-pocketed left and right until she meets the Busters, who are failed wrestlers, who actually knows Aunt P and dropped Andy off to where Aunt P lives. Turns out that Craig is Aunt P's nephew and cons Andy to help him sell some things at a market in the Tenderizing District in return to convince his aunt to train Andy. There, Andy meets up with an ight-year-old boy in a muscular body named Mikey, voiced by TK Weaver, after she gets scammed again since Craig is a wanted man due to scamming. Thankfully, Mickey invites her to train and admits that he wants to be a sports journalist instead of following his father's footsteps like him and his brothers. After one fight and impressing the eldest brother, Mikey now joins Andy and Craig to get better at wrestling. The rest of the story leads to Andy learning the "Perfect Strike" that Casa Poblana is known for. Which I will admit it leads to an interesting part of the story where they go into this town where these tag team and ex-married couple Ruff and Tumble to find out how to master the Perfect Strike more yet Andy, Craig and Mikey get caught up in a middle of a turf war between the ex-married couple and they had to find out why they're fighting in the most ridiculous way possible that it's just funny. Then, in the last few episodes, we see Andy go into a tournament-like gig where she fought just about a couple of matches, perfecting her own style of the Perfect Strike. I will admit that I get Andy wanted to learn a move to become better since this is a journey to improve and become a great wrestler like Casa Poblana, who she looks up to, but it would've been a lot interesting that she learns other moves besides the Perfect Strike. However, it doesn't stop her from how she develops her character that is relatable to becoming more than who she was raised to be. Sydney Mikayla provides an amazing voice when it comes to Andy. I also wish that it does go on a little longer since this is a ten episode animated series, and where it ends has me wanting more. As far as the other characters go, I like Mikey as a supporting cast, and I have to admit that Craig, despite helping Andy out, too, does get on my nerves most of the time. Mikey's older brother gets some good moments. Andy's parents are likable since they understand what their daughter wants. I love the Busters, especially Goldy, voiced by Carla Renata, who encourages Andy as well as Pampa and Coca have done since they're relatable for being failed wrestlers and wants Andy to succeed in her dream. Aunt P gets a few good laughs as she is a cynical old woman after retiring, selling peppers, and gets pressured to finally train Andy. Then you have this Scouter, voiced by Keith David, who also voices as the Narrator, who scouts for the Global Wrestling Commission, sees Andy having potential and looks forward to see her as the time comes. That is, if the second season gets done because, again, after that ending, I do want to know where it goes afterward. The world building is also cool as it's like how you see it like My Hero Academia or Ultimate Wrestling as the theme of the series is what keeps various places up and running. I find the style of sending wrestling arenas via satellite is hilarious and found that it works since the Global Wrestling Commission are known throughout the world yet may be something else due to Aunt P conversing with the Scouter during the last few episodes of the series. I even find the action amazing since they would use the animation in various ways on how the actions work as someone who used to watch wrestling back in his school days can understand. Though it seems that there was more to wrestling as there are times that it's more MMA involved. This animated series is certainly a love letter to shonen anime if we're looking at the similarities to characters, the action, and the world building. I had a great time with this series. It's not perfect and does make me look forward to what the next season delivers once that's been finished. Because Andy's journey to becoming the best young wrestler has just begun. So I'm gonna give this eight and a half Andy posing for the Perfect Strike out of ten. 8.5/10. Though let's be real, it would be nice to see her learn some other moves aside from what she'd learned. But I digress. Maybe we'll see them when the next season drops. See more Pen Panda Jun 2 I'll explain why I gave this five stars with no spoilers (pros and cons): This show is written extremely well. At the pilot episode, it was already obvious to me that the writers took very meticulous time with what they were writing. They made sure to hit all of the beats, and puled it off successfully even with a PG animated film. I was surprised, since I assumed it was made for kids. But this show is great for family or adults. The story never felt rushed. There was a healthy balance between transition and exposition. The characters in this story are actually compelling. It's the first time that I've seen it in a while. Most shows nowadays don't make the characters interesting or relatable at all. But whether you look at the villains or heroes, there is true humanity behind this show. It's not all about fighting, even though it is inspired from shonen anime. Even the goofiest parts of characters are for symbolic use and have a deeper meaning. Also, there was a part that made me very emotional, which surprised me since there is only one story that almost made me cry in my entire life. I say this to further support the idea that this show is not just some wacky cartoon. There is true human soul behind this. As a black man, This is one of the only African-American stories I've seen that wasn't shoving politics down my throat. I could finally watch a genuine story for once that wasn't trying to teach me something and persuade me to tolerate certain things that a large demographic of people do not want to see on TV all of the time. The animation was something I genuinely was surprised by. It captures the compelling character designs first developed by Disney, but also weave in the powerful animations that drive Shonen anime today. For this reason, anyone can both say that the animation is industry-standard, but also simply "interesting." Lastly the show is truly funny. For some reason, lots of animations have this half-heated humor that anyone would come up with. It's as if they write the comedy in a rough draft and just publish it in the script without even trying to make the audience laugh. But the humor in this show is very relatable and also unexpected at times. This wouldn't be a real review if I didn't provide negative feedback as well. The only negative feedback I would have is that there are some moments where I feel the shonen inspiration is unecessary. For instance, sometimes characters talk or think in a way that is almost identical to shonen anime in a way that seems to just break the scenes in an odd way (however the voice acting is on point.) Outside of that, I can only see people have issues with the show if simply the concept does not interest them for whatever reason. I personally do not care about wrestling, but I can easily get into this show. Because it is more story and character based than trying to show you something to get your money. See more jbreeze s Mar 19 This show was amazing, I stumbled upon it and fell in love with it, I’m now waiting and anticipating the next episode. Originally I assumed it was not something I would watch seeing the previews but it came on while I was busy and I found myself distracted by it, and eventually fully invested. My only regret is that I started it while the season is still going, and I want to binge watch it instead. See more James C 01/13/2025 its as if the writers went full on death note mode and the animators invented crack,LSD,myth, and cocaine and blended them into a protein powder and put it into the office water supply and told everyone to go wild See more Snupie t 01/05/2025 I really enjoyed this series. I watched every episode weekly on MAX. I believe that we need to make some noise about this show and get others to see it. It has the potential to one of the greats if it is allowed to continue. *Some minor spoilers for the early episodes below* Andy is a loveable and relatable protagonist chasing her childhood dream with incredible determination. I especially loved the fact NO ONE in this show talks/looks down to her because of gender. It truly felt like an "equal gender society". Don't get me wrong she is looked down upon, but because of lack of experience, both as a wrestler and in the real world. I found Craig to be a tad annoying at times, but I get the feeling that it was intentional, like when he takes Andy's phone and chucks it at the ground or his obsession with money. He's comic relief with a personality, he deserves the bad things that happend to him and it feels like proper carmic justice, which I found fun. Mikey is just great, he's a combination of Lancer and Brain integrated perfectly together. Like Andy he's chasing a dream, but he needed a proper push to get going. His dream to become a wrestling journalist is I great way to have him support Andy from the side lines with analysis while still mirroring her in chasing their dreams. I can't wait for season 2 to find out more about this world. The entire concept of a wrestling run world is interesting. Even to me who has never enjoyed real life wrestling. I remember Lucha Libre trying something similar, but I much prefer the world building in this See more Christopher S 12/21/2024 By far one of my favorite shows to watch with my daughter!!
