"Laurel Canyon" is celebratory and intimate, and the constant barrage of photos and footage does its trick. Go to Full Review

Laurel Canyon is a nearly four-hour exercise in bliss, throwing us back to a fleeting time when musical warmth and formal excellence went hand in hand and made the whole world want to go "California Dreamin'." Go to Full Review

One of the joys in the two-part, Epix documentary series is hearing the stories about the music movement that sprang from the canyon in the 1960s and the 1970s - even if we've heard some of these stories before. Go to Full Review

The story seems more relevant than ever 50 years later with America once again ripping apart at the seams. The miracle is that so many key players are still here to tell it, including David Crosby, Steven Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young. Go to Full Review

Laurel Canyon doesn't cover a lot of new ground, but Ellwood manages to liven up very familiar stories with vivid archival footage and stills, many courtesy of photographers Henry Diltz and Nurit Wilde. Go to Full Review

10/04/2021 A magical time in music history, when musicians found that their voice had the power to make change. Something todays music sorely lacks. See more 05/19/2021 I did not like that on new interviews they weren't on camera and that they use old interviews. Everything should have been new and on camera. See more 02/15/2021 I only seen this t.v. series once and I thought that it was pretty good. Interesting and kept my attention, I would say that it was wotht the watch. I would recommened it to music fans and fans of this time era/music etc... Interesting take on the musicans thoughts and what they shared and their experences in this time period and music sence. 2 part t.v. series about music and people from the 60's that lived and hung out in Laurel Canyon in the 1960's, lots of music and intereviews. I tought that this show was put toget her well etc... 2 1/2 stars. See more susan j @CallMeLulu 11/07/2020 In contrast to the flawed and foundationally pretentious other Laurel Canyon documentary was--i.e., "Echo In the Canyon"--this documentary is absolutely superb! It is everything I have been hoping for, for years. This will sound superficial, but I literally appreciated and enjoyed everything about it. Whereas "Echo in the Canyon" had an ugly, snide, ironic, opportunistic vibe--"Laurel Canyon" was made with love--and is one of the only films (feature or documentary) that conveys what actually California feels like--rather than seeming like a parody or cartoon--in all its glory and darker side. Fabulous stories, interviews, insights, tons of film I'd not seen before (and I've seen a lot of documentaries about this time period and intersecting topics). Bravo and Brava! See more 08/25/2020 If you always wanted to know about this incredibly important period of a magical time in music, you'll have to wait for the next documentarian who REALLY knows how to tell the story. As a musicologist and 30+ year fan of this time period, it is SUCH a letdown; a boring, tedious joke of a documentary where the sides of the roads of miscellaneous Laurel Canyon streets are the star of the show- seriously! 1/2 of this "documentary" is just slices of 'car drives down the road" while the musicians of that time tell underwhelming stories. The director is HORRIBLE! She has NO imagination and the vision and excitement of this period is a shell of what it was, due to her myopic attempt at storytelling. It's clear baby boomers are giving this good ratings purely for the sake of nostalgia alone. Sad reasoning and telling of the lowering of standards towards what a REAL, GOOD and LOVING documentary should have. See more 07/11/2020 Much better than Echo In the Canyon, which is about the same scene. Laurel Canyon goes much more into significant musicians/acts that were were barely mentioned in Echo...or left out completely. To try and make a doc about that scene and not mention the likes of Love, Gram Parson-era Byrds, and those songwriters who would come to represent the so-called 'Southern California sound' of the early-mid 70's is a failing of the filmmakers. Great video and interview bits of Arthur Lee, Johnny Echols and Love playing live, also of the '68 Byrds & The Flying Burrito Brothers. I wasn't too interested in most of the 2nd part of this doc, however. Too heavy on The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt stuff. 3.8 stars See more Read all reviews
