(Dan) Stevens is the polar opposite of your typical trippy anti-hero, so seeing him all twitchy and googly-eyed plays sweet games with your mind. Which is what Legion is all about.

It is an interesting perspective and one that should be applauded. It is taking this almost human standpoint that makes it easier for superhero novices, like myself, to engage with this intelligent and non-formulaic, refreshing series.

Legion's visual density on a shot-by-shot basis and the scope of its world-building is already impressive enough, especially in just over three minutes, but it's a sign of the show's creative aspirations that Hawley isn't content to stop there.

To have Haller's mental distress explained away as the work of a malevolent external force feels like a cop-out, betraying not only the true nature of the X-Men but also the rules of the paranoid thriller in general.
