Lilyhammer: Season 1 (2012)

SEASON:

Season 1
Lilyhammer

Critics Consensus

Relying on Steven Van Zandt's wry gravitas, Lilyhammer mines gentle chuckles from its fish-out-of-water scenario, but declines to offer much beyond a culture clash between Nordic and wiseguy caricatures.

Tv Season Info

In this first original series from Netflix, New York Mafia boss Frank "The Fixer" Tagliano (Steven Van Zandt) testifies against his associates and is relocated with a brand new identity to Lillehammer in Norway, where 'cultural differences' soon become apparent. In the rural town, he befriends a teacher named Sigrid (Marian Saastad Ottesen), and while their relationship develops, she grows suspicious of his secrets.

Leaves you much as it found you. Van Zandt's performance is as broad as one might expect: he doesn't so much act as do his Silvio thing. It's a mobster caricature.

Overall both the deadpan humor and the occasional bits of violence are tepid.

The show looks good and professional and slick, and it plays; it's perfectly watchable, with a pleasant overlay of processed quirk.

A fabulous character comedy-drama that's as unusual as it is entertaining.

It's The Sopranos meets Cool Runnings.

It has a certain charm to it, and Van Zandt is very watchable. I quite like it.

Lilyhammer kept overstepping the line that separates likeably eccentric from plain hokey.

Not much is played for direct laughs, but Lilyhammer is damn funny and as warm hearted as the setting is cold.

I wouldn't say Lilyhammer is worth signing up for Netflix to see, but if you're already paying for it and you like Van Zandt - and Norwegian knits - it's certainly worth a look.

If you're looking for a well-written, mature series that effectively balances drama and humor, this one fits the bill.

It's hackneyed, it's forced, it's silly. But the bad news for Netflix is that it's meh.

Other fish-out-of-water films and TV series have done it so, so much better and quicker.

Enjoyable. Disappointed there were only three seasons.

The acting was good and the story and theme kept me interested until the very end. A must watch must watch for fans of mobster movies .

After watching the series Norsemen which is also a Norwegian/English show I watched Lilyhammer because it has many of same actors as Norsemen. Lilyhammer is one the first series Netflix produced back in 2010-2011. Norsemen is a far better and funnier show but Lilyhammer held my attention quite well. Steven Van Vandt is a bit shaky at points as the lead but overall it’s a pretty entertaining show. It being set Lillehammer, Norway definitely gives it style and creativity while you also learn interesting things about Norwegian culture

A fantastic show with great characters!!! I truly hope it is brought back someday for at least another season or movie to wrap up a few minor loose ends!! In any case, awesome work from the cast & crew, thanks for the great times! (PS- if anyone misses the actors like I did; check out “Norsemen”!! Another work of art right there...

One of the best series ever. A unique style and flavor; think New York style pizza with a side of farikal. Absolutely loved it.

The best thing about this show are the Norwegians! They are funny, interesting and one ends up caring about them. The acting by Van Zandt is so awful! He was amusing for during the fist few episodes but after that it's become so unpleasant to watch him "act"!

A breath of (cold) fresh air.
  • Jun 16, 2015
Made me laugh my ass off during the whole first season of this original series with the typecasted, yet deservingly so Steven Van Zandt!
  • Jan 04, 2015
Better than I was expecting. It took a bit to "get into it" but once we watched a few episodes we started to really enjoy it. Van Zandt is great, as always.

Slow Start, which is expected to a show so different like this one, great build up, and an Ending to the season that didn't fit... Good Enough to check out the season and i'm anxious enough to get to Season 2
