Critic Reviews for Little America Season 1
All Critics (37) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (35) | Rotten (2)
Little America is smart, nuanced television.
Perhaps most importantly, "Little America" avoids becoming patriotic propaganda not by disparaging the United States and its policies (which it rarely does), but by selectively emphasizing what America can offer at its best.
And, thanks to the wise and humane writing, all of the episodes have the reach and breadth of full-length movies.
Its ambitions aren't flashy, but Little America leads with a clear investment in the kinds of people often relegated to the background of other shows. It's a smart, empathetic choice.
The subjects vary, but almost without exception the stories are quirky yet resonant, emotional and relatable, with a sweet (or occasionally slightly bittersweet) payoff.
The funny, inspiring Little America tells immigrant stories that are pleasing without preaching...
Inspired by true stories ..., the Apple TV+ series celebrates immigrants. Their culture, values, hopes, fears, dreams, perseverance, way of life, [and] search for an identity.
Each episode of Little America is based on a true story of an immigrant to the United States, and retold in a 30-minute block of inspiring, unwavering humanity filled with hope, humor, and joy.
Little America abstains from trying to deliver sweet generalizations about American immigration. The jumbled pictures of immigration it presents are too difficult to pin down.
The key thing with Little America's anthology premise is that the number of stories it can tell, about different immigrants from different places experiencing America in different ways, is virtually limitless.
It's a beautiful, endearing show, one that never loses sight of its fascinating characters.
The key is in the chosen tone, without being showy or excessively sentimental. There's no big declarations other than the entrance to those private worlds, always seen with the eyes of those who arrive to stay. [Full Review in Spanish]

Nov 20, 2020What a great way to open the doors of immigration to our country and those who have not been affected by it or it's people. Such great stories
-
Oct 05, 2020Earnest, preachy, not very entertaining.
-
Sep 23, 2020Really nice collection of stories ... uneven, but there are some total gems. Heartwarming and life-affirming is not usually my lane, but I thoroughly enjoyed this overall and found it a nice change of pace from my usual fare of dark, brooding, and strange.

Sep 03, 2020A very well-written show with great characters and heartwarming stories. I honestly love that it keeps it real and points to serious issues and problems but at the same time it stays positive and wholesome.
-
Jun 20, 2020In between a documentary and a feature film, based on true stories and done with a flavour of experience from the immigrant group in questions, even with part of the story told in the native tongue. Each story has been told in an evocative manner, but with a totally consistent storyline, which I like in particular. Akin to accentuated cinema trend. Totally believable and nurturing hope in people's ingenuity, persistence and ability to understand each other.
