Set in Somerset, England, in the year 1894, the story follows the couple as they stand to inherit the family estate when Nathan's mother passes away. They decide to move into the old house and begin a new life together on the farm, but not everything is as it seems. Isolated in the English countryside, the pair encounters some menacing paranormal phenomena that threaten to tear their marriage apart.

In less capable hands, the many ideas in this sumptuously shot series would completely devolve into an unwieldy pastiche, but Pharoah and his directors have clear visions for each detour, which the series leads handle with aplomb. Go to Full Review

I'd seen it all before aside from the final scene, which seemed to introduce someone from the future. Intriguing, I accept, but even though all six episodes are now available on iPlayer, I find I am insufficiently enthralled to ever return. Sorry. Go to Full Review

The Living And The Dead is good-looking, atmospheric and accessible. It's neither so terrifying that it will scare off the Poldark crowd (it shares a producer with the same), nor, thanks to the modern-day mystery, so vanilla that genre fans will be bored. Go to Full Review

If you're in the mood for something kind of creepy and kind of drama-filled that won't completely eat up your weekend, The Living and the Dead is it. Go to Full Review

luna t May 21 Considering how well this was done from start to almost finish, I cannot overlook the dreadful ending. See more Kalissa H @kali_416 May 14 I enjoyed it, especially episode 6. Left with a huge cliffhanger, though. See more 09/08/2020 I really enjoyed the acting, and production values of this series. The storyline kept me very interested, and wanting to see each new episode. The horror is subtle and intriguing without jump scares. I had hoped for a better ending, but without giving any spoilers. After researching the series, I think the production company had hoped to have a second season. But sadly, there wasn't. See more 11/17/2019 Despite I remember detecting some minimal plot holes, The Living and the Dead has a dark atmosphere combined with creepy characters and heavy story that will spooke you with some well played unexpected jumpscares and it will visual delight you with their rural and old filming locations. The cast is superb. See more 07/29/2019 Cinematically gorgeous, Beautiful settings, evocative score. Acting is far superior to anything one normally sees on television. Colin Morgan and Charlotte Spencer give it their all, especially Morgan whose decent into madness was viscerally frightening. Entire varied cast is wonderful. Drew me in and kept me wanting more. Too bad it was cancelled after one season. Only negative criticism is writers/creators didn't seem to be able to decide on definite them but everything else was so good that even that flaw could be overlooked. I definitely recommend this rich, highly evocative short series as one of the best acted and directed ghost stories I have ever seen. Hopefully, we will get to see Morgan hit it big in films because he is a superior actor who commands the screen. When Morgan is on screen, one cannot look away. See more 01/07/2018 A well acted moody, atmospheric engrossing tale from start to finish. Too bad about the tacked on bit at the end without the benefit of a second season. The characters in this tale deserve more. The BBC really dropped the ball by not picking this up for another season. See more Read all reviews
