There's a heat wave in New York and when Paul and Jamie go out to dinner they find it's even hotter outside. When they decide to borrow Fran's car and head for the sea for some fried clams, Jamie is upset to find out that Fran got her old job.
Paul and Jamie are at war with their new neighbors over their apartments and the building becoming a co-op, but their dogs don't share their families' animosity.
Jamie's quest for the perfect resting place for her uncle's ashes leads the Buchmans to Belmont Park.
Mr. Wicker moves in with Paul and Jamie after he and his wife fall out because of his infatuation with a new resident; Jamie is not happy when she discovers that she needs to wear glasses.
Jamie enjoys arranging a promotional event for the sporting-goods store and getting a former Yankees player to make an appearance; Paul is angry when he finds out Burt is turning the store over to Ira.
Jamie leaves New York in the dark when she tries to get a free cable TV hookup in their bedroom; Paul is a finalist for a grant for his new documentary.
While at a birthday party for Fran, Jamie has an unexpected meeting with an ex-boyfriend (Eric Stoltz) and they argue about who dumped who; Paul flirts with another woman.
Paul and Jamie are planning to host their first Thanksgiving dinner, and have invited both sets of parents. They are forced to scramble for a new plan after Murray eats the turkey.
Paul and Jamie are arguing over their sexual prowess, which creates a tense atmosphere that is obvious to their friends; they lie about the cause, but the lies have repercussions.
Jamie's had a bad day, and doesn't want to go to the movies with Paul, but he persuades her to go out to meet Ira's new girlfriend (Marita Geraghty). As they struggle to get across town, they are plagued by turbulent encounters with strangers.
