Critic Consensus: Maya & Marty is a safer, weekday version of Saturday Night Live with little to recommend it other than Maya Rudolph and Martin Short's admittedly considerable charms.

News & Interviews for Maya & Marty: Season 1
Ironically, one of the things that was a problem for such an underwhelming show on the whole was that it had a couple of flashes of excitement that emphasized how phoned-in some of the rest of it often felt.
The whole enterprise felt like a modest "Tuesday Night Live" with Lorne Michaels executive producing. The old-school sketch comedy veterans pulled it off. They could help pass the time on a hot summer night.
Oh how I love Maya Rudolph and Martin Short. And oh how I didn't love their new summer variety series, Maya & Marty.
I agree that Martin Short is a treasure, and I feel much the same about Maya Rudolph. That's why it's somewhat heartbreaking to report that Maya & Marty... seems, at least on first viewing, like a mess.
It's during the sketches that the show loses steam. Many of the ideas seem half-baked; they start out promisingly, but don't go anywhere.
