Critics Consensus

Well-acted but off-puttingly sordid, Monsters leaves viewers feeling guilty without enough pleasure to compensate.

The astoundingly prolific showrunner melds his modes as provocateur and clumsy social-justice warrior, with mixed results. Go to Full Review

The second season of Ryan Murphy’s biographical crime anthology literally doesn’t know when to stop. If you want to credit this to ambition, then there are rewards... but if you lean towards lurid excess, Monsters certainly incriminates itself. Go to Full Review

Monsters proves itself capable of confronting a complex case with sensitivity — which makes its increasing sensationalism and salaciousness all the more frustrating. Go to Full Review

The series ends up leaving a bittersweet taste: powerful at its best moments, but unable to sustain its initial promise. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

While it may not be the right show for every taste, it’s not “trash TV” either. It’s a bold and challenging work from one of our most prolific and dedicated queer showmen... Go to Full Review

While the Menendez brothers’ story is undeniably interesting, I found the characters were all people I didn’t want to spend time with, whether or not there was a miscarriage of justice. Go to Full Review

Ketty T @RT13593393 Sep 5, 2026 I didn’t like that they showed the parents getting shot all gun stores have to have background checks and the language See more Melchizedek Franz Noval S @Melchizedek Aug 17, 2026 The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is a dark, disturbing entry in the Monster anthology that explores the Menendez case from multiple perspectives, focusing on the brothers’ relationship and their claims of childhood abuse. Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch stand out with strong, contrasting performances as the brothers, while Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny add intensity and dysfunction to the Menendez family. The strongest moments make you question what you're watching, raising issues of abuse, trauma, guilt, and how fully the truth can be captured. However, the series can feel sensational and repetitive, with its nine-episode run sometimes stretched out. Overall, it's compelling and well-acted, but definitely uneven. A fascinating true-crime drama with some great performances, even if it doesn't always know when to stop. See more diogo13 T @Tua_mera Jul 15, 2026 The second season of this Ryan Murphy anthology series gets lost in its own ambition by trying to embrace multiple contradictory perspectives on the case. Although the main cast delivers performances of enormous emotional commitment, the narrative suffers from a bizarre tonal oscillation, alternating between exaggerated melodrama and serious real-life crime. The feeling is one of sensationalist and bloated work that stretches too far a story that could have been told in fewer episodes. See more Wallef S @Wsil10 Jul 9, 2026 The effects of the scenes involving children and parents were very impactful. I thought Nicholas' performance was excellent, convincingly conveying the character's disturbing behavior. Koch presented a very intense interpretation, with a downcast look and an expression of sadness and submission towards his brother, his father and the circumstances of his life. I don't know if this characterization corresponds to the real Erick. Overall, the series has top-notch interpretations. See more Pedro R. @RT17058026 Jun 23, 2026 I believe it is the best Monster. I hate how they try to victimize the parents. Other than that. Great Show and Acting See more Tommy D @Thomas005 Apr 9, 2026 Not my favourite Monsters season but I like it. Sometimes is boring and incoerent tone, the cast is good See more Read all reviews
