Critic Reviews for Neverland Season 1
All Critics (14) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (8) | Rotten (6)
It's packed with action, much of it violent, and even more packed with special effects.
Just make sure you see it.
It's bad storytelling clothed in good storytelling, and there's something horrible about that, about using other's work to prop up your own vague, clumsy attempts at world-building.
As constructed, it amounts to a Peter Pan prequel lacquered up with a revisionist space-age paint job.
What a thudding, literal-minded bore it is.
As Neverland unfortunately shows throughout, when you spend all your time and energy explaining how the trick works, there's precious little left to entertain the audience.
Oh, well, it makes for a mildly enjoyable story and it's probably best not to overthink things.
There are some nice moments, but it should be much shorter.
Syfy's miniseries Neverland doesn't end up having much of a point, but the cribbed elements from other popular fantasy TV series, movies, and books are mixed together in an entertaining way, which makes the enterprise definitely watchable.
If you yearn for the days of high-quality, big-budget, fantasy miniseries, skip Syfy's Neverland.
By pulling the curtain back on the magic of Neverland, Willing has stripped all the fun from a marvelous classic.
Adds clever new twists to the origin story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook while remaining unpretentiously faithful to the adventurous spirit of the original.
Audience Reviews for Neverland: Season 1

Nov 03, 2020Interesting premise. Pretty good acting. But it's really hard to get past the visual effects. Peter actually looks suspended by wires when he flies, and not just during his first awkward attempts. The backgrounds in the forest look incredibly cheap and unrealistic at times. The big white blocks that he steps on at times in Neverland look like styrofoam or something. Also, at tikes, you can't believe how stupid and naive these guys are, both Peter and Hook and other characters who are just dim. Overall, interesting take but the amateur effects killed it.

Aug 25, 2016Worst adaptation I've ever seen.

Jan 08, 2016Uma que outra ideia interessante, mas uma bagunça geral com um elenco bem toscão tirando o Rhys Ifans.

Oct 14, 2015Peter and James Hook start out as friends in this as well; just like in Pan. Sadly though; this made for SyFy mini-series is much better than Pan. Just like Pan, Neverland is a prequel. It actually casts Indians as the tribe in Neverland, James Hook slowly turns bad and Peter meets Tinkerbell. There you go; three things the Pan film is missing. Stay home and watch Neverland.

Jun 05, 2014Too compressed and often in a hurry, 'Neverland' is never boring, but it squanders its great cast and premise with indecisive, clunky storytelling and a lack of charm or humour. And the mediocre action and lax CGI don't exactly help matters either.

Nov 24, 2013While it does tweak the Peter Pan mythology a bit, this is still an interesting alternative take on the origins of the character. The one problem I had with this is that the fairies are borderline uncanny valley and not magical enough.
