Neverland: Season 1 (2011)

Season 1
Neverland

Critics Consensus

A prequel to Peter Pan, Neverland has some decent action scenes but lacks the character development and sense of wonder to make its fantastical elements truly resonate.

It's packed with action, much of it violent, and even more packed with special effects.

There are some nice moments, but it should be much shorter.

Oh, well, it makes for a mildly enjoyable story and it's probably best not to overthink things.

What a thudding, literal-minded bore it is.

Dec 12, 2011 | Full Review…

As constructed, it amounts to a Peter Pan prequel lacquered up with a revisionist space-age paint job.

It's bad storytelling clothed in good storytelling, and there's something horrible about that, about using other's work to prop up your own vague, clumsy attempts at world-building.

By pulling the curtain back on the magic of Neverland, Willing has stripped all the fun from a marvelous classic.

As Neverland unfortunately shows throughout, when you spend all your time and energy explaining how the trick works, there's precious little left to entertain the audience.

If you yearn for the days of high-quality, big-budget, fantasy miniseries, skip Syfy's Neverland.

Dec 12, 2011 | Full Review…

Syfy's miniseries Neverland doesn't end up having much of a point, but the cribbed elements from other popular fantasy TV series, movies, and books are mixed together in an entertaining way, which makes the enterprise definitely watchable.

Adds clever new twists to the origin story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook while remaining unpretentiously faithful to the adventurous spirit of the original.

Audience Reviews for Neverland: Season 1

    Worst adaptation I've ever seen.

Uma que outra ideia interessante, mas uma bagunça geral com um elenco bem toscão tirando o Rhys Ifans.

Peter and James Hook start out as friends in this as well; just like in Pan. Sadly though; this made for SyFy mini-series is much better than Pan. Just like Pan, Neverland is a prequel. It actually casts Indians as the tribe in Neverland, James Hook slowly turns bad and Peter meets Tinkerbell. There you go; three things the Pan film is missing. Stay home and watch Neverland.

Too compressed and often in a hurry, 'Neverland' is never boring, but it squanders its great cast and premise with indecisive, clunky storytelling and a lack of charm or humour. And the mediocre action and lax CGI don't exactly help matters either.

While it does tweak the Peter Pan mythology a bit, this is still an interesting alternative take on the origins of the character. The one problem I had with this is that the fairies are borderline uncanny valley and not magical enough.
