Critic Reviews for Reign Season 2
All Critics (7) | Top Critics (3) | Fresh (7) | Rotten (0)
It's season 2 of Reign and you know what that means! Royal intrigue and hot bodice-ripping teen sex!
The plague served as a great stand-in for the king's madness, bringing a dramatic weight with it that kept viewers on their toes.
This is also a show that's unafraid to directly examine power, which is one of the reasons it's succeeded as more than a compendium of ridiculous moments.
After a rollercoaster freshman season, the series reshuffled the deck with "The Plague," a densely plotted episode that worked almost as a standalone outing but also went far in establishing new threads for Reign's sophomore year.
It was a decent episode to set up the groundwork for the rest of the season.
Overall this premiere set the tone for what looks like a much darker season this year, and I liked it.
While the tone was somber, we were still treated to sparking dialog delivered with the appropriate intensity to match every scene.

Aug 01, 2020Some reworking of history is galling but the actors are still making this a treat.
-
May 13, 2020I think I'll stop this drama series at the beginning of season 2. This is highly innacurate with historic events and situations of the late medieval times.

Dec 03, 2019Season Two continues to deliver gorgeous costumes, slightly soapy drama, and the most beautiful, tanned, white-toothed 16th Century nobles you've ever seen - but I'm totally here for it. Adelaide Kane and Toby Regbo have wonderful chemistry and you find yourself really loving them - even though you know the show probably won't completely rewrite history and give them a truly happy ending. Now that the show has got past the will they?/or won't they? they do throw a mix of ridiculous spats and jealousies and real, touching drama the royals' way. The supporting stories are often just as good - I enjoy Greer and Kenna (but find Anna Popplewell annoying, cloying, and grasping). But the true Queen of this entire series is Megan Follows as Catherine de Medici - she is complicated, conspiring, and ruthless - such a rich character. Follows is perfect - especially in the snide delivery of her biting one-liners.

Apr 10, 2019As a fan from season 1, I can appreciate the story and have become emotionally invested in characters. The scenery and wardrobe are just as gorgeous as the 1rst! Like I've already said, there's a great mix of History and fantasy!

Jun 22, 2016One of the best TV series out there. I have loved every episode of this fictional historical drama. Adelaide Kane is brilliant as Mary and the rest of the cast have a way of making you love their characters too. A must see in my books. Can't wait for season 4!
