In 2012 Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman. Martin, a 17-year-old African-American high school student, was visiting a friend with his father and was unarmed. Based on Florida's Stand Your Ground Law, Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder, claiming he shot Martin in self-defense. The fatal encounter and the subsequent trial sparked outrage and protests and shined an unforgiving light on issues including race, politics, power, money and gun control. Across six episodes, this unscripted documentary recounts the life and legacy of Trayvon and includes interviews combined with home videos, family photos, and news footage. It also addresses cultural and societal issues surrounding the tragedy, and it presents an in-depth examination into the investigation, trial, and the not-guilty verdict.

What started as an effort to record a moment in history became, by the end, a documentary of the moment we're living now. If ever a series had enough material for a second season, sadly this is it. Go to Full Review

The documentary makes you wonder just how many racially motivated deaths and other barbaric abuses have slipped by the sleeping (or willfully ignorant) public prior to the age of Twitter. Go to Full Review

Tina S @Tinas413 May 23 This is beyond out of touch. I dont need or want to hear the abuser Jay z opinion on anything. Also he's worth 100s of millions but somehow it's marginalized. Make it make sense See more 05/27/2019 Unadulterated BS. The critic reviews are almost as big a joke. A total distortion of what happened. Which is what has always been presented on television and other media. If you want to understand what actually happened watch the trial. See more 09/26/2018 Loved it. Jay Z did an excellent job. I feel that the mom and dad dropped the ball. Zimmerman 's karma is not happening fast enough. See more 08/21/2018 As I watched the first three episodes, and having actively looked at the evidence in the case, I had to say the production and cinematography was excelent, but the facts claimed and the innuendo was not. As it does not sell itself as historical fiction but a documentary, it fails miserably, distorting facts, presenting half truths and promoting racist biases that clearly show it is a political hit piece and not an attempt at fact finding. The acolytes of the church of Trayvon will love it, the far right will hate it, but for those of us who are truth seekers and don’t fall for ideological or political biases it is just a sad reminder of how easily people are swayed into falling down the rabbit hole. This is as bad as the Russian Meddling, and a far cry from Fruitvale Station and the Kalief Browder story which were both excelent pieces. See more 08/15/2018 This was a fabulous documentary; riveting, heartbreaking and, finally, enlightening. It took the death of this innocent young man to bring about the "Black Lives Matter" movement.
