The disappearance of former college acquaintance Chantal leads several 20-somethings to get entangled in the mystery of how she went missing. Leading the search party is Dory, a lifelong doormat who works as a rich housewife's assistant. Dory makes it her personal mission to find Chantal -- and she's bringing her friends into the investigation with her. Self-diagnosed narcissist Elliott, who puts his ego aside long enough to agree to help Dory, is particularly good at detective work. Bubbly actress Portia excels at chatting up suspects for information because of her desperate need to be in the spotlight. Sheltered-but-sweet doofus Drew has to grow a spine to help solve the mystery and save his deteriorating relationship with Dory. Dory's ex-boyfriend Julian seeks the truth, regardless of who it hurts, because of his background as a journalist.

As aha moments go, it's laughably simple, though it's not a shock it took four seasons for her to grasp the basics of cause and effect. In Search Party's darkest chapter yet, the scariest thing you can be is in control. Go to Full Review

You almost hope that Dory, Drew, Elliott and Portia fail, because not only do the hijinks prove endlessly hilarious, but the resultant pathos feels uniquely reflective of this very moment. Go to Full Review

After three seasons proving itself uniquely adept at bridging compelling mystery with hilarious satire about the self-absorption of millennials, Search Party continues to raise the bar in season four. Go to Full Review

Jay C. @suifuun2 Jan 20 It starts out different than any previous season, true to form, which is probably why people didn't love Season 4 as much. If the first half runs a bit, the second half is truly, truly worth the wait. I'm a lifelong writer. Believe me when I say, the second half of Season 4 is some of the best character and plot writing I have ever witnessed. In my life. As a man in my 30s, I wept. Poignant. Perfectly written. See more Gareth v @geewah 06/14/2023 So, so disappointing. This show could of been round off perfectly at the end of season 3, but instead the attempt to keep it going results in this rather dull and pointless season. See more Corey W 02/15/2023 The first season to stumble in an otherwise excellent show, Search Party's fourth season is off the rails and threatens to take the whole series with it. In seasons past the acting and writing have carried the show even as it took strange turns and changed all its scenery. The only drawback of such a progression is that each season needs bigger stakes and eventually the weight of the entire project collapses beneath itself. In this season we find Dory (played by the always excellent Alia Shawkat) kidnapped and held hostage following her "not guilty" verdict for murder. Her kidnapper is Chip (Cole Escola), a mentally unwell waiter who came in at the end of the previous season. Chip is obsessed with Dory, due to her very public story, and just wants to show Dory that they're best friends. Escola plays his character perfectly and steals every scene that he's in. Being able to be psychotic and unpredictable but also awkwardly funny throughout is certainly a tightrope walk that he navigates admirably. Although the feeling of suffocation was certainly intended for this season there's simply too much of it. The middle of the season drags on without much in the way of development and the bleakness of the whole thing adds another element that makes the season hard to watch. There's always another issue too: Dory may well deserve what she got. Dory is a proven liar and manipulator who escaped justice at least once, arguably twice. As the show goes on both Dory and her friends become harder and harder to defend or root for. And maybe that's the point, but it doesn't make for particularly compelling television. From the finale it's clear that we're in store for at least one more season of Search Party, though it's not clear why. The showrunners have ignored plenty of outs throughout their seasons, yet they always come back to make more. After seasons two and three it was almost impressive, but it might finally be time to let this one die before the thing being searched for is quality. See more Greg S 09/17/2022 Acting, writing, directing...fantastic. See more Ryan K @ryan_k1 04/18/2022 Disappointing. Having resolved the story of the first three seasons, the writers have written themselves into a corner and had to pursue a completely different narrative. Unfortunately, I believe it is a flop. The story while disturbing is not nearly as interesting as the previous seasons and was a bit of a slog to get through. Many of the beats were predictable and the character motivations were not as consistent. I would not recommend this season and, if you are able to stop after watching the first three seasons, then I definitely would.
