Critic Reviews for Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 1

All Critics (15) | Top Critics (6)

The new series aspires to the level of a virtual-reality game. That's both the source of its great visual charm and the key to its emptiness, which is too dull to get worked up about.

At a generous estimate, the eternal light-sabre battles fall victim to the law of diminishing returns, even for children, after 40 minutes - which leaves nearly an hour of boredom.

If you judge this series by the standards of the original trilogy--i.e., if you expect it to be good--then yes, it's as disappointing as the summer movie it follows.

The heroes are as brave as ever, in their mythological ways, and the villains are as ruthless as they come.

Watching Yoda take apart a squad of tanks with his little lightsaber is just as much fun as it's supposed to be.

The animated adventures are supposed to expand on the time that occurred between movies, giving us a look at the much anticipated, but never seen, Clone Wars. Instead, they kind of make me wish that era was still shrouded in secrecy.

While there's nothing particularly surprising about this show, it's fun overall, and the animation is beautiful.

The Clone Wars will certainly polarise Star Wars fans, but if you can lose the baggage it offers fairly solid entertainment.

Apr 26, 2018 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

It has a ton of great action and adventure, is increasingly great to look at, and has had some surprisingly effective character moments. It's flawed to be sure, but it has proven it can really deliver when it's firing on all cylinders.

Oct 30, 2015 | Rating: 7.7/10 | Full Review…

The animation has improved [and] is more emotionally resonant. The CG is actually really good for a television show... and they introduced quite a bit of really interesting expanded universe storylines that you can actually get really invested in.

May 1, 2018 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

Featuring familiar, and not so familiar characters from the Star Wars series, we're presented with an occasionally meaty series for a 'children's show,' let alone an animated one.

Apr 26, 2018 | Full Review…

There's more attention to character development; Jabba the Hutt's flamboyant uncle isn't anywhere to be found.

Audience Reviews for Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Season 1

Nice storytelling of the time between the plot periods of episodes II and III. It's getting more exciting towards the end.
  • Sep 12, 2020
This show gets great later, but this first season is very hard to watch with cheesy humor, boring episodes and pretty bad Star Wars elements.
  • Aug 30, 2020
I will give them a chance so it was so good

Ep. 1 - I love how they sprinkled in Yoda's theme in there throughout the episode, especially when he was giving advice to his clone troopers. Almost shed a tear. Very short and simple episode and a great way to open up the series - with Yoda. Funny at times and exciting to watch when the action gets going. All the elements that makes a great Star Wars movie are here. Let's GO! Ep. 2 - Insane to see just how powerful the Separatist's are becoming and seeing their massive weapon of destruction. Plo Koon is so badass. Seeing how he was able to use force push and pull during his fight in space against the droids was impressive and how he cut the ship's pincers, so awesome. He's another great Jedi Master and seeing how much he cared about his clone troops, was really inspiring. Too bad the clones end up turning on everyone later on in the saga. Ep. 3 - That scene where they're flying through the nebula and all those huge whale creatures come out of nowhere is worth watching just for that. Love the quotes at the beginning of each episode and how they reflect the main message for the episode. Not only is this a series kids can enjoy, but they can also learn something positive from it to take into real life. Ep. 4 - Great rescue mission episode. Reminds me of the beginning of A New Hope. I love how Grievous used Kenobi's line, "Hello there" when he saw him in person. Clever and witty nuances all throughout this episode and we get to see Kenobi's cheekiness. Crazy how they sent Padme on a mission only for her to be set up in a trap. Probably all planned by Palpatine and Dooku. Ep. 5 - Interesting to see the Commando droids in action. I love how it's kind of a kids show but even as an adult I'm really enjoying it and I can see the darker and more serious tones in certain episodes like this one. I like how the clones have their own personalities. That was badass how ‘heavy' sacrificed himself so that he could blow the station up. Ep. 6 - I don't know why but the visuals in this episode look all screwed up. The textures look like they weren't rendered correctly. Kind of a weaker episode but still ok. I like how the scavenger ship had the ICB-11 droids from Mandalorian. Ep. 7 - Unbelievable how the R3 'Goldie' droid was working in cahoots with Grievous. That little piece of shit! That explains all the mishaps that happened on the ship with Anakin. R2D2 fighting an R3 unit fight! Lmao so good. R2 is the fucking GOAT man! Always and forever. What a great companion to have. Both loyal and trustworthy. Way better episode than the previous.

It was better than the movie, and had some pretty cool story and character development.

Season 1 of the Clone Wars isn't perfect, but it is a good starting point for the show. Season 1 & 2 are the most children friendly of this series and for that I respect it. My brother on seven watched season 1 & 2 and had a great time. I also have fond memories of this show from my youth. I respect Season 1 of the Clone Wars!

Similar to the film, this first season fails to leave a good impression and rarely expands on the universe as a whole. The characters fail to develop, and most of the episodes would make no difference if you skipped them. Overall, the development of this show from this reason to season 7 is super impressive.
  • May 24, 2020
By far the worst season of the show. I think it gave some people a bad impression, so please power through it.
  • May 17, 2020
entire show best enjoyed if you follow the right guide. If you don't follow a guide you will have to watch a lot of content that you don't care for
  • May 09, 2020
Despite an incredible first half 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Season 1 suffers from repeative storylines that some times might drag the Series down plus the appearance of Jar Jar Binks is painful. (7.5/10)
