While Steven Universe has always dealt with mental health and trauma, Steven Universe Future is shining a brighter light specifically on Steven's mental health. Go to Full Review

A cartoon that's a rallying cry to love yourself and grow into your identity should be nothing radical for children. Steven Universe envisions a world where queerness is extraordinary as it is normal. Go to Full Review

Instead of endlessly cycling through more and more enemies, the show's wrap-up is doing something strange and amazing: it's reminding viewers that what happens after a fight may be just as important to the participants as what happens during it. Go to Full Review

The Awsome C @Dexter_Pig Dec 17 Even when I was little, Steven Universe helped me cope with my unstable father, but I could relate more to none more than steven universe future. It's not just the relations though, as Steven Universe Future perfectly captures the internal feelings of Post traumatic stress. Even If you can't relate, the realistic feelings and conflict make this one of the best sequal seires of all time. See more J Jun 13 Was a fantastic exploration of what happens when a child who took on a great deal of responsibility helping those around them learn to heal from trauma and becomes a young adult who never processed their own exposure to trauma. It was great to see a real impact on the protagonist for the scary things he experienced as a little kid. See more K L Mar 2 I never watched Steven Universe as a child I now watched both series back to back as an adult. And I actually enjoyed Future more. While the original show had some great standout episodes, it also had a lot of filler, whereas Future told a focused, meaningful story with intention. Some may think Steven’s struggles are difficult to watch, but that’s the point. He’s no longer a child; he’s a teenager dealing with the aftermath of years spent putting others before himself. That arc felt incredibly natural and well-earned. This show is just a great continuation that goes deep into Steven’s emotional struggles in a way that feels real and beautifully executed. Unlike the original Steven Universe, which had a more lighthearted and often episodic approach, Future is straight to the point, tackling the weight of Steven’s past responsibilities and the toll they’ve taken on him. Some comments are saying Future is rushed but I don’t think it was rushed at all. It had something to say, and it told that story in a concise, effective way. I truly appreciate the creators for exploring this side of Steven and giving his character the depth and closure he deserved. And some people say the side characters did not have enough a storyline but this mainly focused Steven’s internal battle so I really did not see that as problem. I hope the creators are proud of this! See more Kevin P 01/16/2025 An interesting subversion of the happy ending that dwells on Steven's repressed trauma and deconstructs his role in the show. It's not perfect in its execution and some of the side characters feel a bit underutilized in this epilogue series. But at the end of the day, this is Steven's story and after 5 seasons and a movie of helping others, it's finally time for him to receive help from everyone's he's supported from the series. It's a bit messy, but there's a strong message about change and coming to terms with yourself before you can truly move on. Which is all done beautifully and makes up for it's shortcomings. I also wish this mini-season was longer to further develop these big changes and final arcs, but with how much the network tried to suppress the series, I'm just glad we even got this sequel series at all. There are a few filler episodes with some intentionally cringey moments. But there are a lot of great episodes that give new depth or closure to the characters, like Volleyball's episode, Peridot's TV dreams episode, a fun snow day episode with a ton of transformations, a cute BismuthXPearl episode, and a decent sendoff episode for Lapis. Though ngl, I found it inconsistent that one of Steven's new character arcs in this season is anger management and not giving into fighting.......only to have him be the one to preach to Lapis about not giving into anger or fighting in "Why So Blue?" (Also seriously, if anyone could relate to his depression & unresolved trauma, it's her!). There's also an interesting episode about the Diamonds reforming, yet not truly being forgiven by Steven as he very clearly still has justifiable resentment to them. The final episode culminated in Steven's repressed trauma, anger, and self-loathing exploding (after a shocking twist with Steven shattering Jasper, which is nicely resolved with everyone he's helped coming together to help him for a change. The ending is beautiful, one last wave goodbye and Steven driving off into the dawn with the mesmerizing "Being Human" hitting you hard in the feels (most of the music this season is pretty solid). It's not a perfect polished mini-series, but it's very ambitious and thankfully its highs more than make up for its rushed lows and missed potential. See more THEULTIMATE R 08/10/2024 A huge fan of Steven universe I was amazed at how good this was on my re watch, this does not go into the stuff the original series did but into the effects and after shocks of all that has happened and I love it. See more Austin S @auskooper 07/21/2024 Pretty good as an epilogue series though I definitely prefer the original series See more Read all reviews
