Critics Consensus

The 90th Oscars played it safe and hit no major snags -- but by clocking in at over four hours, returning host Jimmy Kimmel and company wore out their welcome long before the night's conclusion.

Kimmel was a Goldilocks -- funny but not riotous, sharp but not cutting, cool, not hot.

At the end of the evening Dunaway and Beatty presented the Oscar, with no hiccups, to The Shape of Water, an undramatic end to an undramatic evening.

The unwieldy thing was a chore even for movie lovers who had seen the nominees.

There are probably a lot of people adjacent to the Oscars who just didn't want any surprises Sunday night. And the biggest takeaway from the evening -- the good news and the bad news -- is that there weren't any.

This was the best, most inspiring, and most sheerly likable Academy Awards telecast I've ever seen and I've seen 'em all.

A new host behind the mic... would have delivered a more powerful show. One that wouldn't have felt nearly four hours long (even though it was); one thoroughly unforgettable instead of sporadically memorable.

While it probably won't be remembered too strongly for its big moments, the 90th Oscars were incredibly well-produced and featured a stellar Best Picture lineup to boot.

It was...settling back into being its normal, boring, pre-Moonlight self. The ceremony was too long, as always, and there were too many bits and too much huffing and puffing over the magic of movies, as always.

This year there seemed to be an embarrassment of riches when it came to the socio-political issues. Gender, age, sexuality, colour, diversity - in giving nods to all and more, at times it felt like Oscar had bitten off more than it could chew.

The Oscars telecast, clocking in at four hours and 50 minutes, was chock-full of carefully-produced moments. Yet it couldn't live up to its own.

What was most intriguing was... The dreadful, saccharine segments in which the Academy promised to honour black people and women -- issues that will be abandoned now they have tragically found out that sanctimony doesn't boost ratings.

Was it respectful? Absolutely. Did it make for kind of a dull, earnest Oscars show. Yeah, kind of.
