Compared to the fullness past seasons instilled in us, however, these felt like empty calories even though the components are more or less the same, save for a couple of ingredient swaps. Go to Full Review

The increasing strain of the technical challenges demonstrates the trend away from the homey and familiar of The Great British Baking Show toward the spectacle and inflated stakes that define so many other cooking competitions. Go to Full Review

There is a greater joy to be found in an emotional landscape where the greatest disappointment is some unrisen dough, the purest thrill some beautifully neat piping. Yes, it's the same old Bake Off -- but it's a slightly different world. Go to Full Review

I'm delighted that appointment television is here again. Go to Full Review

Even if this season winds up wobblier than usual with more soggy bottoms all around, there's new host Matt Lucas. His quiet, friendly energy has brought back a much needed "contestant friend" element to the Tent. Go to Full Review

I'm too fatigued by the ordinary horrors of life outside the tent to make any case against a one-hour-a-week escape into the sweetly stressful sublime. Go to Full Review

12/29/2021 I have watched nearly every season and episode of this show and have found it, particularly during this pandemic, to be unusually a positive and uplifting part of this world, BUT sending arguably the best baker in the season home in the semi-final to keep the most incompetent begs credulity. Seriously, I have watched close decisions before but this wasn't one of those. Laura, at least from what the viewers were shown, should have been sent home many weeks earlier (is she someone's cousin?). It certainly made the final a bit of a joke, no matter how talented the two guys were. Like throwing Usain Bolt out of the Olympic finals. There is nothing Paul and Pru could say to support this ridiculous decision that wouldn't sound embarrassing. They lost all credibility here. Not sure how anyone with integrity or a heart can continue watching with the same enthusiasm or trust. Is one or both of them racist? I cannot fathom any rational way they could have done this and I am furious at such a betrayal of trust. See more 06/06/2021 I really like the addition of Matt Lucas, even though no one has really replaced Mel and Sue. I think the Great Brits might have sniffed on "Nailed It" this season, as the contestants had to recreate their heroes in cake, and in doing so, created the most hilarious episode of this show...ever. I'd really love it if they had to bake more American dishes, because the Brits always throw poop at American pies, just like we think mincemeat is horribly disgusting. See more 12/07/2020 I like the 2020 introduction of the new co-host Lucas, he is adorable and funny, but the vibe of the show seems off. It felt manic and chaotic, and what I like about the show is that is it usually has a relaxing vibe, even during the last 5 minutes of a challenge. The show has lost a lot a pinch of its sweetness, its gentle vibe. It was my go-to show if I needed to relax because it made me smile and I enjoy the cheerful look and vibe of the tent. 2020 felt somehow tense, forced and the comments and jokes did seem to center too much on sexuality, it felt like an out of control classroom. It used to feel more authentic, more genuine, now it feels a little forced. Like when a great show tries to bring in a new audience with a new vibe, or new rules but loses its old audience in the process. British Bake Off isn't there yet, but it is heading in that direction. I hope they pull it back, but the reigns on the tipsy horse, take some deep breaths, and realize that not all change is positive. See more Read all reviews
