Season 1
The Last Tycoon
This old-fashioned tour through F. Scott Fitzgerald's vision of Hollywood has lush production values and an attractive varnish of glamorous pedigree, but lacks a storytelling hook or a compelling character to latch onto - resulting in an inert bauble that is pleasing to look at but elusive to feel.

Critic Reviews for The Last Tycoon Season 1
All Critics (41) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (19) | Rotten (22)
The melodrama is largely focused on the people inside and on an industry that's always been in love with itself. It's not a perfect show, but it's a pretty perfect binge-watch, if that's how you choose to do it.
The result is a glossy look at the time period that, despite leaning on some familiar emotional and story territory, still makes for an engaging, enjoyable viewing experience.
The Last Tycoon is so sumptuous that it's easy to overlook how pedestrian the story often is. That's not immediately apparent because what's onscreen is stunning.
The show looks beautiful enough and has been so well-cast that those qualities can sometimes be enough when you're looking for a streaming option on a hot summer weekend.
The series acutely feels like an idea that would have made for a good movie, instead of being stretched to a breaking point to make it work for TV.
A diverting series that uses history the way revelers at a Gatsby-themed party today use a strand of fake pearls... It's a missed opportunity. One that, after a gorgeous 10 hours, you may not remember.
The Last Tycoon has all the glamorous trappings of old Hollywood: Amazon clearly threw lots of money at the screen, with sumptuous costumes by Mad Men designer Janie Bryant. But the joy is missing.
While the period details are exquisite throughout "The Last Tycoon," the conflict doesn't jump off the screen quite like the costumes.
There's a lot of pedigree here, but none of it jumps off the screen.
Part of the problem is that [Matt] Bomer's performance doesn't suggest the emotional or artistic depths of Monroe. In a role that calls for a Don Draper, he is too often like a less-pouty Pete Campbell.
The Last Tycoon is a 1930s Hollywood drama based on the last, unfinished novel by F Scott Fitzgerald. This script should have stayed in the drawer, too.
It's absolutely gorgeous to behold in its sumptuous re-creation of 1930s Hollywood glamour, yet glacial in pace, only sporadically catching dramatic fire.

May 18, 2020Not good, certainly not an improvement on the Elia Kazan 1976 movie. Although both suffer from a lack of realism with regards to the Stahr character. His physical vulnerability needs to be in the casting. He couldn't be a superman, not physically if he is based on Irving Thalberg?

Jan 12, 2020I want to see a second season. I love this series. It was left unfinished. It stinks that the Kathleen character and The Pat Brady character get away with their shady antics.
