Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Yet if this can feel like a series almost drunk on its budget and running time, there is still the intimate, twisted dance of Sauron and Celebrimbor (Edwards really is superb here). Go to Full Review

The episodes manage to feel both overlong and cramped. So much has been added to pad out the show’s trajectory and provide tonal suspense to an epic that fundamentally doesn’t need it. Go to Full Review

This series abounds in radically underexplained mutinies. Go to Full Review

Rings of Power Season 2 is far more action-packed and eventful than Season 1. Despite its flaws, character story imbalances, and bumps in the narrative road, I still enjoyed it. Go to Full Review

For fans of the series who have liked the first season, the newest season of The Rings of Power will prove to be a monumental work that remains consistent with – and perhaps even surpasses – what we have seen from the rest of the show so far. Go to Full Review

Season 2 of Rings of Power is strong. Cinematography is great, the acting is solid and the narrative and themes feel true to Tolkien, even when it colored outside the lines of his legendarium. Especially impressed the dynamic of Sauron and Celebrimbor. Go to Full Review

Pavlos K @Mikhael123 1d Sauron cries twice in the season, Galadriel and Elrond kiss and the orcs have babies. See more Mark K @icarusmelting 6d After suffering through the first season, I primarily watched to answer the perverted question if the writers could possibly make this series any worse. Sadly for all involved, they succeeded. Just terrible in the most uninteresting way possible. The most apt comparison to the Tolkien books and Peter Jackson's films to this mess is to equate the Lord of the Rings universe to Star Wars. This series is A Star Wars Christmas. George Lucas wisely tried to erase that series from history. Unfortunately, J.R.R. Tolkien is not alive to try and do the same here. Apparently his heirs don't give a shit about his legacy. Do yourself a favor and try to find a bootleg copy of A Star Wars Christmas online instead of suffering through this steaming pile of crap. See more Lawrence O @Ollie99 Jan 20 I love Lord of the Rings and this show is a great addition. See more Nathan S @NathanS. Jan 20 Critics are smoking crack with this one. It's a badtardization of Tolkiens work. See more Carlisle F @cfindlay13 Jan 15 The problems with this show are not the messages about current political or cultural issues. It’s not the diverse cast or the female lead character. It’s the plot, the storyline, the writing! The problem is the complete lack of respect and integrity to the source material. This show does not resemble the work of Tolkien in any way other than essentially stealing names. The Silmarillion is one of the most epic fantasies ever written, and the world created therein is probably the most popular and renowned in history. I don’t know why you would deviate from something that has already proven itself for 75 years. Peter Jackson directed the most successful movies of all time because they were TRUE to the source material. I’m not sure if Amazon did not have the rights to be true to the source material. This is not Middle Earth or the Lord of the Rings at all. I was so excited for this project, and it has been a horrible disappointment. See more Xen G @Mangocaine Jan 11 An improvement certainly over the first season, carried mostly by the name/setting, the score, and to a degree by performance of most of the actors - Sauron and Celebrimbor are both noticeably well played. A shame Adar's actor isn't the same as s1. The writing however is pretty damn bad, the pacing is bad, the battles and duels are also pretty bad. There's distinct lack of emotion in a fair amount of dialogue where you'd expect it, and there's a lot of deus ex machina or other random miracle work going on to push scenes forward for no reason. Episodes 3,4 and 7 were particularly painful to watch, with the exception of scenes involving Sauron and Celebrimbor (not the writing around them though). 1,2 were enjoyable, and so were 5 and 6. The finale was plain uninteresting. Overall it seems like good actors are being held back by screenwriting and directing that ought to be grounds for imprisonment. 2/5 for me See more Read all reviews
