Absolutely nothing that occurs here is believable in the slightest. But does that matter? Absolutely not.

From the producers of The Blacklist, The Player has the same witty mock-formal vibe - giving Snipes the full Spader treatment. He's all debonair evil, constantly adjusting his tie and smiling at how cunningly he's screwed over everybody else.

NBC dealt one too many cards from the deck because The Player is basically absurd with a dollop of stupid on top and a whole bunch of empty tossed in for filler.
September 24, 2015
The Player might not be the dumbest show of all time ... but it's up there.

Sure, Thursday's pilot is junk, but it's pretty, diligent junk, essentially The Whopper of action TV, heaped high with mayhem condiments.

Do you want to see a sharp-dressed Wesley Snipes beat up some people in Las Vegas? Of course you do. I do. We all do. But it isn't exactly essential viewing week to week. Save it for later.

Within the first two episodes of Heroes Reborn - which air back-to-back for its Thursday-night premiere - it becomes clear that this is still very much the same show that played four seasons and outstayed its welcome by three.
September 24, 2015
Though it has some slick car chases, The Player lacks the wit, ingenuity and originality to inspire curiosity about what's going to happen next.
September 24, 2015
And no, despite the presence of an under-employed Wesley Snipes and whatever wan hopes NBC might have had, there are no signs in The Player that the show could ever have been more than a standard-issue, hunky crime-fighter, mindlessly competent TV show.
September 24, 2015
The premise is repugnant, and the execution is preposterous.
September 24, 2015
The show about high-stakes gambling is evidence of NBC's risk aversion. Don't hate The Player, hate the game. Well... maybe also hate The Player.

It's an efficient if mass-produced engine - every week a different race against crime and time - made a bit more interesting by the most dangerous game gone digital.
September 24, 2015
Although this isn't a flat-out terrible series, don't bet on NBC having a winner opposite fearsome time slot competition from CBS' Thursday Night Football and ABC's How to Get Away with Murder. No one likes those odds.

As if there weren't already enough reasons to dislike Las Vegas, along comes The Player, a new action series from NBC with a ludicrous plot full of unlikable characters played by not particularly likable actors.
September 23, 2015
Like Snipes in his most recent high-profile movie, "The Player" is expendable.
September 23, 2015
There's a lot that remains murky - it's hard to see the series blossoming into much of anything, based on the thudding nature of the premiere.
September 21, 2015
[The Player] which features Wesley Snipes as the head of Los Vegas syndicate that bets on crime... is packed with action (and Winchester's abs) as well as a cheeky, almost campy sense of humor, as if it's fully aware of how silly this all is.
September 21, 2015
It's hard to quantify but there's something more enjoyable about a program that knows its purpose and function in the TV landscape and doesn't outreach its grasp. The Player is fun, and doesn't really try to be anything more than that.
September 21, 2015
There are some good action sequences, and Snipes is his usual smooth self, but neither is enough to compensate for the convoluted, leaden premise. Game over.

[Winchester's] a charmingly roguish performer, and in The Player he's well-matched to his character.
