It's fitfully interesting, intermittently compelling, but, on average, terribly dull.

If you're the kinda person that enjoys psychological thrillers, mysteries... I cannot recommend AMC's The Prisoner enough.

By the time the viewer gets to episode five or so -- if they have the endurance to make it that far, that is -- there's really just one question going through your mind. "Where's a life-snuffing giant white bubble when you need one?"

The whole thing, really, is anticlimactic, a staid, existential rumination, which is occasionally as nonsensical as the original but never as amusing.

Whereas Patrick McGoohan's original series was playful as well as thoughtful, this new remake is depressingly dour, and, with its rethought finale, ultimately unsatisfying.

The series is compelling with a great cast and great dialogue but it is rather slow paced and although the direction and beautiful scenery never get tiresome, the slow moving storyline is hard to get past.

Unfortunately the new Prisoner's dominant characteristics are its sluggish tempo, limited vision and inability to drag itself out of the shadow of the Patrick McGoohan original.

It's entirely possible that this is the sort of thing that will someday be hailed as a misunderstood masterpiece... On the other hand, maybe the producers just simply got this wrong.

[It] succeeds on its own terms.

This new Prisoner tries to be mysterious and compelling, like ABC's Lost. But it's not so much Lost as Misguided.

The producers approach the concept with all due seriousness and, for all the enigmatic details, a literalness that loses the dark humor, satirical wit and the allegorical resonance of the original.

Not even the combined forces of Jesus and Gandalf can save this from being anything more than just a passable time killer.

The opening episode and the closing episode were decent, but everything in between seems to be just fluff to add confusion to the audience via the characters themselves.

The result proves perhaps not surprisingly frustrating -- a very British six-hour, three-night event that features striking images and arresting moments but can't overcome a persistent lack of coherence.
November 23, 2009
It's self-absorbed to the point of incoherence.

I suspect that this somewhat gutless iteration is still likely to enrage die-hard "Prisoner" fans.
November 23, 2009
It's frequently too choppy and elliptical to build up much suspense or dramatic impact.

As the story moves along, we understand Six's desire to get out.

This Prisoner is visually stunning and risk-taking but not a satisfying rethinking.

Failing to breathe life into it is just disappointing, if not entirely unexpected.
