In the premiere season of this sitcom about the seemingly ideal Irish-Catholic O'Neal clan who live in Chicago, the family's picture-perfect image is shattered when they all stop keeping secrets and start being honest with one another. Oldest son Jimmy (Matthew Shively), a star on the wrestling team, has an eating disorder; middle child Kenny (Noah Galvin) has been hiding the fact that he's gay; and youngest child Shannon (Bebe Wood) has been running a scam with the church's money. It's above-average without being top tier. But ABC has proven its mettle in the kid-centric comedy arena, so it's best not to under-estimate this one's staying power or potential for growth.

In a world where everyone's offended by something, The Real O'Neals won't escape unscathed. But it finds its own firm middle ground.

Like The Middle or The Goldbergs, the show is a sunny, single-camera comedy with occasional flights of fancy, but like Black-ish, it's not afraid to go after tougher issues in a funny way.

I kept waiting for it to be edgier, smarter, and just funnier. Maybe that will come with time, although ABC may not have the patience for the show to find itself.

ABC's new comedy The Real O'Neals isn't as biting or controversial as conservative protesters would have you believe, but it works perfectly fine as a typical family sitcom.
