Tv Season Info

In the premiere season of this sitcom about the seemingly ideal Irish-Catholic O'Neal clan who live in Chicago, the family's picture-perfect image is shattered when they all stop keeping secrets and start being honest with one another. Oldest son Jimmy (Matthew Shively), a star on the wrestling team, has an eating disorder; middle child Kenny (Noah Galvin) has been hiding the fact that he's gay; and youngest child Shannon (Bebe Wood) has been running a scam with the church's money. Meanwhile, happily married parents Eileen (Martha Plimpton) and Pat (Jay R. Ferguson) reveal they really aren't so happy and are planning on getting a divorce.

Critic Reviews for The Real O'Neals Season 1

It's above-average without being top tier. But ABC has proven its mettle in the kid-centric comedy arena, so it's best not to under-estimate this one's staying power or potential for growth.

In a world where everyone's offended by something, The Real O'Neals won't escape unscathed. But it finds its own firm middle ground.

Like The Middle or The Goldbergs, the show is a sunny, single-camera comedy with occasional flights of fancy, but like Black-ish, it's not afraid to go after tougher issues in a funny way.

I kept waiting for it to be edgier, smarter, and just funnier. Maybe that will come with time, although ABC may not have the patience for the show to find itself.

The first couple of episodes were directed by Todd Holland, whose work on Malcolm in the Middle reminds you that he knows how to be clever with broad material, but here, the scripts fail his talent.

ABC's new comedy The Real O'Neals isn't as biting or controversial as conservative protesters would have you believe, but it works perfectly fine as a typical family sitcom.

Mar 2, 2016 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

It's not the hippest or the most cult-ready show to hit the airwaves, but The Real O'Neals is upbeat, silly in all the right ways, and serves as another example of ABC's quiet takeover of broadcast comedy.

Behold one of the more promising family sitcoms we've seen in a while.

An irreverent, fantastical approach in line with ABC's winning roster of family comedies.

Mar 2, 2016 | Full Review…

Plimpton and Ferguson are good at not being good together, but the writing so far is uneven.

Mar 1, 2016 | Full Review…

Give it some time. ABC has had such a killer record with shows like this (The Goldbergs, The Middle, and even the ageing Modern Family are all equally excellent) that I can't imagine this won't find its groove.

By ABC standards, as well as modern conventions, the O'Neals couldn't be more normal. It's just too bad that they're not as distinct as their show thinks they are.

Funny, sweet ... but does NOT show real LGBT people's struggles. In all honesty, it's just a "white gay" show, whereas it could have been taken way futher.
