What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Woman in the Window's morbid mystery touches on real historical territory that it's not always equipped to handle, but Ruth Wilson's terrific performance provides ample enough reason to keep watching.

It is beautifully and harrowingly done. And -- such a rarity this -- the gothic element, spilling out of Lorna’s mind and home, feels not like a bolt-on to add drama lacking elsewhere but an integral part of the story. Go to Full Review

The show is messy, but it’s never boring. Go to Full Review

The experimental aspect concerns Wilson’s courage as a performer and creator Joe Murtagh’s refreshing but genuinely challenging lack of interest in making traumatized people palatable. Go to Full Review

Certainly not an easy or comfortable watch, Woman is nonetheless addictive appointment viewing. Go to Full Review

David d @RT60547085 Nov 2 Well, Ruth Wilson seems to specialize in psychopatic roles... What makes the series even more compelling is that it is based on TRUE HISTORY; between the 1920's and 1960's hundreds of babies from unmarried and underaged girls were taken and sold off by the church, against payments disguised as donations. And persons of authority inside and outside the church covered it up, looked the other way or just did not care... helped by a innate sense of guill of the women whose babies were robbed. Only later were several documentaries made and an official government investigation started, in 2013 I believe, when so much information had surfaced, as well as bodies and living, adopted children of those Irish women, that it could not be neglected any more.... The filming and scenery is excellent, as is the portrayal of some characters: the acronymous Mother Superior, the old police Sargeant, etc. Ruth Wilson as Lorna overdoes it at times, in my opinion, but then again she suffers from schizofrenic manic depression (eh, my invention ;-) . No 4 or 5 stars from me though, as I felt that, though in general very well told, some storylines were fragmented or incomplete. ------------------------ BEWARE, SPOILERS ----------------------------------------- As I said above, some storylines were fragmented or incomplete. Like the storyline of Aeife, the nun with a conscience who tries to make amends by bringing out incriminating documents. Her part is only told through the eyes of others. Then there is the illogical part of her being trapped inside a flimsy wooden wall, that she could have broken out of at any time - or made enough noise to be heard. Yet she is found in the attic - from which she should also have been able to escape. Oh well, I suppose the makers needed a catalyst for Lorna to start her quest for her baby and those of others. And the fact that a lot of compelling evidence surfaces during Lorna's and the police's enquiries, that should have been enough to bring down the whole conspiracy with a deafening bang, but is not happening. Worthwhile a watch nevertheless, and worth looking into the real-world results of the investigations. This story deserves to be told many times - the real story for sure, see the documentaries - and those responsible, if still alive, be brought to justice ! See more Steph L @RT16136679 12/03/2024 Truth is hard to find in court documents and news reports. Even testimonies taken in the cold clinical light of day give mostly intellectual clarity. I felt the truth of the crimes inflicted on the women and children of the Magdalene laundries by the church and state watching this incredible piece of work more than I've ever been able to feel before. Incredible cast, script and staging. Ruth Wilson's Lorna is a masterpiece. See more Tom F @RT55173143 04/28/2024 Strong concept and Ruth Wilson is remarkable in the lead. Maybe longer than it should have been. See more Chas J @RT68173135 02/29/2024 Annoying and dull. Ruth Wilson’s mouth is cringe. It’s hard to focus on any show that she’s in. Her speech is like nails on a chalkboard to me See more B C @That_Brett 02/23/2024 I thought this show was depressingly wonderful. The lead was amazing per the usual. I know it’s a dramatic interpretation of real events. But, I watched this show and can’t help but feel human beings are awful, and the Catholic Church is even worse. See more Read all reviews
