The subject matter is the effect the war had... on the mindset of the US itself. This does not, however, make the enterprise worthless. Accept those narrow parameters and the stories it tells are powerful, often stunningly, movingly so. Go to Full Review

ut although this “Vietnam” celebrates heroism and rescue when it can, the series is hardly revisionist. Most of what the U.S. did wrong during the war is visited, often repeatedly. Go to Full Review

Constructed from a mass of little-seen documentary footage shot by TV crews as well as individual soldiers and pilots, it’s thrillingly immersive and often shocking. Go to Full Review

Despite its compressed format, Vietnam: The War That Changed America has remarkable footage and fascinating interviews with people who had a first-person perspective of what it was like to fight the Vietnam War. Go to Full Review

Showing the strength of soul and character displayed by these selfless individuals, who sacrificed so much, and emerging on the other side exhibiting bottomless and upbeat optimism is frequently overwhelming. Go to Full Review

There have been more comprehensive documentaries about the war (Ken Burns‘ definitive The Vietnam War as an excellent example), but few as sharply focused on the personal. Go to Full Review

Kieran G Nov 25 Immediately starts painting black soldiers and Vietnamese citizens as victims of horrible white men. Garbage. See more Keith M Apr 30 I can’t believe people are criticising this. It really is the most complete, powerful and accurate account. It is shocking that American has forgotten and has tried to erase what happened. This maps the real peoples stories of their horror, trauma and pain. The critics are trying to trivialise and dismiss these experiences and what America did. See more Symone Z Feb 13 This is ok but the music is lazy and predictable. The stories are oft repeated in the episodes and the meetings of old friends felt a little markish. The brutality of the war is beautifully illustrated but this series lacks something, maybe heart?… If you want to watch a brilliant rounded masterpiece that covers this saddening war, watch Ken Burns series - it has a much more compelling, simplistic yet human tale to tell. See more Karen H Feb 8 I grew up watching the combat footage and death counts on the evening news and was too young to understand that this was a changing era for our country. Now decades later, I've seen countless films and heard numerous talks on the Viet Nam War, but this is the first piece to spotlight the people in the famous photos and events. Beautifully narrated by Ethan Hawke, there's not one superfluous moment in this presentation. From the American GI tunnel rats to the locals who dug those tunnels, the individual voices come alive in this well paced series. I couldn't stop watching. See more Ernest T Feb 7 As a Gen X I’ve been mind numbed by the press and historians, specifically, the narrative we should’ve never been there in the first place and that we lost. This movie does a great job of showing the personal stories which were left out as well as important details behind some of the most famous and contentious video and pictures from the war. One of my many favorites is about why a Captain of a U.S. Carrier ordered his men to dump over a billion dollars worth of choppers into the sea. Another is the back story of why a South Vietnamese executed a VC in the street. Yes the photo that became famous in LIFE magazine. See more Agustin G Feb 5 Sad stuff, my heart goes to all veterans of Vietnam that were sacrificed in pursue of nothing. I will say that if you want to fight a war do it with conviction and don´t send your men to die without purpose and even worse hamstrung with rules of combat, all lawyered up with a good chance of going to prison for things your enemy does as common tactics. Very good documentary specially the eye witness accounts and I loved the music See more Read all reviews
