This is a show about middle class sex obsession and our reviewer could barely get through the first of the six-episode series before being gripped with the lust-less urge to wander away from the television screen.

This premise might prime us for mockery but what's served up is poignant, and often painful honesty.

Wanderlust was written by the playwright Nick Payne, and its tone benefits from a single voice: The show certainly has funny moments, but it strives for realism most of the time.

Love is a journey, and if we're lucky, it's a long one. But Wanderlust offers a fascinating exploration of the twists and turns along the way.

Stellar performances otherwise, from [Toni] Collette and [Steven] Mackintosh.

[Toni] Collette makes us believe in Joy; if only [Nick] Payne had made us care.

Collette is, of course, always good... But no one is good enough to save a series as unlikely to offend as it is unlikely to leave a new or a true impression on viewers.

In particular, episode 5 is phenomenal television, featuring one of the best scenes I've seen on any screen - big or small - this year. Collette and guest star Sophie Okonedo deserve awards. I watched that episode twice, it's so damn good.

Wanderlust is something much richer and more adult.

Its exploration of an open marriage explores some interesting questions. However, it opens itself up to other needless subplots that bog the proceedings down.

Lots of sex and frank talk in beautiful grown-up drama.

Wanderlust lists the definition of its title underneath the title card in every episode -- "strong longing for, or an impulse toward wandering" -- but it is never lost. Not with Collette at the wheel.

What the series does particularly well is catch what it feels like to be on the verge of intimacy - the pause on the doorstep, the strangeness of another person's space, the charged moment that leads to (or away from) a first kiss.

Wanderlust explores the multitude of reasons people have sex and the things they get out of it: power, control, happiness, or a means to cope with grief.

Joy and Alan had decades of marriage to convince themselves to stray; you'll probably stray after just a few hours with Wanderlust.

Stream it. It'll be interesting to see how the Mannings can figure out how to be with other people and stay a couple.

The writing, weighed down by aspirations to serious thinking about sexual desire, and fulfillment, wanders from a chipper archness-a tone that doesn't do a lot for bedroom atmospherics-to incoherence.
October 19, 2018
More than anything, Wanderlust confronts a familiar issue in a way that makes its characters relatable and oddly endearing.
October 18, 2018
In some ways, "Wanderlust" is a self-analytic over-forty fantasy. It's also a self-help soap opera espousing a practical philosophy of sex, love, and self-knowledge. Always, it's conscious of its heavy hand.
October 18, 2018
Wanderlust is worth watching solely to see the gifted and luminous Collette do her thing.
