Former newspaper illustrator who entered film in 1910 as a cameraman with Essanay studios in Chicago. Totheroh's multi-film association with Charlie Chaplin began when the latter left Keystone for Essanay in 1915. Their collaboration spanned over three decades and included most of Chaplin's masterpieces: "The Tramp" (1915), "The Kid" (1921), "The Gold Rush" (1925) and (as co-cinematographer) "City Lights" (1931), "Modern Times" (1936), "The Great Dictator"(1940) and "Limelight" (1952).
