Japanese director Shiro Toyoda often uses his films to explore the struggle between traditional conformist norms and the notion of individualism and freedom of personal expression. Toyoda entered films as a screenwriter and assistant director to Yasujiro Shimazu at age 19. In the late '20s, he became a full-fledged filmmaker and his career lasted until the late '60s.
