Blood: The Last Vampire

Critics Consensus

Based on a classic anime series, Blood: The Last Vampire is a tedious, shoddily acted, amateurish picture that loses all charm in the transition to live-action.

Movie Info

On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year old girl, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400 year-old "halfling". Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner, obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. When she is sent to an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization for whom she works, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires. Using her superhuman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the base's general that Saya learns her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability to make a human connection.

  • This live-action update of a popular Japanese anime film from 2000 has a heart full of mythology, but its fangs are dulled by an anemic script and clumsy action sequences that are notable mostly for an excess of cheese, not blood.

  • The peculiar, comic-book-like computer graphics -- artful at first -- finally overtake Blood and make it look like a video game instead of a graceful, graphic martial arts movie.

Won't you just look at the CGI? Blood: The Last Vampire is a silly live action adaptation of the anime film of the same name. A half blooded vampire hunts other vampires in Japan, she was sent to a military base to help get rid off the vampires causing trouble. She formed friendship with another girl and with her help they must defeat the leader of all vampires. It's utterly terrible. I don't even want to write anything for it.

Blood: The Last Vampire is a daring and bold horror film that's packed with action. Adapted from an anime film, the story follows a half-vampire named Saya who seeks to avenge her father by killing the vampire that slayed him. The storytelling is fairly solid (except for the last act) and it has an interesting vampire lore. Additionally, the fight choreography is particularly good, and has a uniqueness to it. However, the CGI is rather weak and doesn't quite pull off the surrealism that it appears to be going for. Visually captivating and stylistic, Blood: The Last Vampire is an impressive film that delivers exciting action and a compelling story.
