This film ... comes draped in the hair shirt of revisionism, but in reality it's an unrepentant throwback to the "good old days" when the only good Indian was a dead Indian.
Considering how Huston and Lancaster have artistic disagreements over filming, it surprisingly still turned out relatively well.
Terrific Western with a strong message
The exact opposite of Ford's The Searchers plotwise (wherein a widdle baby white girl gets kidnapped and brought up redskin), a widdle baby Native is kidnapped and brought up white. The moral of the tale: racism is bad if you hate the redskin girl raised in the busom of good ol'godfearin', Pilgrim ancestor family ways, but its good if it means whackin' off the rest o'th'filthy varmints. Leave your common sense by the door and its not as bad as it sounds.
The only thing I liked about the movie was Audrey.
Exciting western tale of forbidden love set against America's most rugged and ruthless frontier. Audrey Hepburn is my idol.
