Movie Info

This wildly off-beat comedy is about a male dancer (Paul Mercurio) who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he's scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he's forced to take up a new partner (Tara Morice), a beginner who initially seems without promise. With his help, she turns into an assured and wonderful dancer. Baz Luhrmann's visual style may be too bright, gaudy and exaggerated for some tastes, yet he treats his characters with compassion, which makes Strictly Ballroom such an engaging comedy.

I absolutely love this film and I have seen it countless times. This and Muriel's Wedding are two of many great Australian films. The film is the typical romantic comedy type of a ballroom dancer who finds a partner but cannot dance with her for fear of worrying about what others think. Some of it is funny and parts are tragic but the overall movie is a very good one and one that you will no doubt watch countless times!

So this is what Baz Luhrmann did for practice before he came up with Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge! If you've seen both, many elements of the film will seem oddly familiar, a reason for me be slightly bored at first. But in the end, it turned out to be entertaining, heartwarming and sheer good fun. If I'd seen it in 1992, I would probably also have considered it original.

"Vivir con miedo es como vivir en medias." I thoroughly enjoyed this film!! It was bright! It was jazzy! It was fun! It was unique! And above all.... AUSTRALIAN! Baz Luhrmann will never cease to visually dazzle me. Gorgeous and sweet!

This had terrible film quality-- like seriously there was terrible color, and fuzz.. but the acting was good.
