Bad Influence Reviews

Bad Influence is a nice Curtis Hanson movie about a yuppie who gets influenced by a socio-psychopath and swirled in a bad life. Starring then young hot shots Rob Lowe and James Spader who play well against one another Bad Influence has a decent enough 80s soundtrack and a nicely paced screenplay. It could have been so much more had it been directed by a more assured director (maybe Curtis 10 years older) because the subject matter is so damn fascinating but this is a good enough effort to wholeheartedly recommend.

This movie is fantastic. It sees a man truly and for the first time grasping at living his own life, and it is a better life (ditching the lame socialite fiancee, standing up for himself at work). This transformation is facilitated largely by his new alpha-male take-no-prisoners 'life coach' (Rob Lowe). Like many movies that promote true male empowerment (Fight Club, Falling Down) the last resort to true progress is employed, meaning that the man promoting the growth has to be eventually be portrayed as crazy, which usually has the lame effect of perhaps casting doubts on all the assessments and progress made thus far.

    A strange but likeable noir/thriller.

Spader and Lowe are well worth watching. This is an otherwise unremarkable erotic thriller.

Rob Lowe is perfect as the seductive, diabolical antagonist. A fun movie that holds up.

Spader and Lowe star as the 2 Coreys in this sumptuous Todd Haynes era recreation of the '90's classic porn flick:" Nancy Reagan, wee lassie, cum home." The film is touching, in all the right places, poignant and saccharine sweet. (It's 5 stars from me, and a Hell of a good night from Rob.)
