Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, and Joel Edgerton create a film that explores identity, family, acceptance, and the struggles of a young man trying to understand himself while facing pressure from those around him. The movie handles its difficult subject matter with compassion and honesty, allowing audiences to connect with the characters on a deeper level. Lucas Hedges gives a heartbreaking performance as Jared, bringing vulnerability and realism to the role. Nicole Kidman is outstanding as a mother who must learn, grow, and truly understand what her son is experiencing. The screenplay does an excellent job building the characters instead of simply focusing on the message. It creates a personal journey that feels emotional and meaningful. I don't recommend watching it if you're already in a slump it will make you feel worse! some of the characters are horrible people and I wish that this wasn't based on a real story. But midway there is probably where the truth lies. The people doing the converting have many hundreds of years of bible thumping homophobics creating the state of some Christian churches against homosexuality and it skews their worldview. See more Gavin H @RT95700184 Jul 5, 2025 This is such an important message in the US and shows how damaging parenting can be if it's about them and their reputation rather than about the child. That is tricky to be sure. No one is trained to be a parent AND and that is a big AND having a moment of reflection, introspection is so vitally important to protecting our kids health. It also shows the harm in religion. I use that in the pejorative as if the bible is read as the intended reading, then homosexuality is no different than having a meal with mixed meat. There is tons of context in reading a religious book. Why single out one misread section and apply that to the whole of humanity. A very good coming to terms movie with lots of honest moments.
