Based on the beloved Roald Dahl tale, this comedic and fantastical film follows young Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) and his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). Aided by his diminutive Oompa Loompa workers (Deep Roy), Wonka has a hidden motivation for the tour, one that he will reveal only after the children in the group show their true colors.

Critics Consensus

Closer to the source material than 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is for people who like their Chocolate visually appealing and dark.

If anything cramps Depp, and the film's sense of fun, it is the weight that is placed on reconciliation between Wonka and his father. Go to Full Review

As the star who's framed in the center of nearly every shot he's in, Depp is a constantly surprising Willy Wonka. Go to Full Review

While Wilder's Wonka had the pensive perfume of bittersweet chocolate, Depp's Wonka is that weird white chocolate--not really what you have in mind when you want to eat chocolate but can be an acquired taste and definitely part of the culinary craft. Go to Full Review

Credit Burton for going the practical route; it visually grounds the otherwise fantastical film. Surprisingly Depp's unhinged and frequently bizarre performance works more often than not. Go to Full Review

... for all of the flights of fantasy, Burton never quite finds the heartbeat that warmed the original classic with Gene Wilder, partly because this Willy Wonka is so disconnected and distracted, unable to relate to anyone... Go to Full Review

A B @RT65081535 2d In my opinion the movie was not that great, the movie was getting better each time one of the other golden ticket holders left, I don’t like how the Oompa Loompas sang so many songs I feel like it was just a waste of time. See more Jeff J @CodeGrue 2d Late to the game but just watched this on streaming. In no universe did this need to be made and in no way is it better than the original. Hollywood, stop wrecking classics. See more Kyle M @RT77296778 6d A faithfully better adaptation that closely elaborates Roald Dahl’s visual storytelling with Tim Burton solidifying his cinematic equivalence through collaborative perfection when his eccentric signature "brightly" and definitively peaked whilst earnestly approached the required thematic representations that’s considerably timeless. But what truly powers the film besides the dazzling vision is Johnny Depp’s quirkily mesmerizing portrayal of the strangely delightful chocolatier in mutually delighted form ever expressively nuanced, then narratively humbled by Freddie Highmore’s admirably embodied innocence. (B+) See more James E @JamesE167 Jul 16 A worthy successor to the original movie. This balances Burtons style with Dahls story very well.
