This was planned for John Belushi, who died before it could get off the ground and might have made the whole thing worth doing.

Basically consists of a wide assortment of character riffs which are offbeat enough to provide moderate moment-to-moment amusement but don't create a great deal of comic impact.

Cardiac arrest finally seizes the film, after a long case of terminal whimsy.

Proves that with the right material an intelligent director of demonstrated style and a cast of thoroughly accomplished comic actors can make as painfully witless a comedy as any knucklehead on the block.

Despite the predictability of the story, there might have been moments of mirth had director Malle been able to sustain a narrative. Since viewers don't care a whit for anyone in it, the picture implodes in its own cynicism.

Audience Reviews for Crackers

I don't make deals with leeches A group of friends down on their luck in San Francisco decide to plot on one of their friends that owns a pawn shop. The pawn shop owner has ripped them all off at one time or another and the friends think a robbery will set them for life and give their friend what he deserves. In the end, the robbery may be more of a pain in the ass than they anticipated. "Jesus, Ramon, you're pimping family now?" Louis Malle, director of Black Moon; Atlantic City; Lacombe Lucian; Elevator to the Gallows; Murmur of the Heart; and A Very Private Affair delivers Crackers. The storyline for this picture is fairly straightforward and has minimal misdirection or creativity. The cast is splendid but a bit underutilized with the 91 minute run time. The cast includes Donald Sutherland, Sean Penn, Jack Warden, Christine Baranski, Wallace Shawn, and Anna Maria Horsford. "What's wrong with my plan?" "Your plan sucks and my plan takes us to Hawaii." I came across Crackers while looking for old Donald Sutherland pictures to DVR. This film definitely has a strong 80s feel and tries to deliver a worthwhile comedic caper plot; unfortunately, the film concludes in an unfulfilling manner despite its good hearted ending. Overall, this movie is a disappointment and may not be worth your time unless you're looking to see Sean Penn in his youth. "Black Mexicans wearing ski masks." Grade: C
