Adrien Brody’s performance is the film’s fragile soul: restrained, wounded, and profoundly human. In his weary eyes lies everything the screenplay tries to articulate. Yet Tony Kaye’s direction suffocates the story beneath layers of artifice. The relentless visual experimentation, the erratic editing, the desperate reach for profundity — all work against the film’s core honesty. What could have been a subtle portrait of despair becomes a dissonant cry for meaning. Still, the story itself has power. The idea of a teacher trying to teach compassion while unable to feel it himself is quietly devastating. Not an easy watch. But a necessary one for anybody wishing to be a parent or teacher. Or anyone in general. There is something for everyone to pull from this film. Both leads had me hooked and… yeah. It also sparked my love for Adrian Brody, who completely carries the film with his heartfelt and haunting performance. See more Storm D @RT17033634 Aug 8 This movie was heartbreaking, disturbing yet ironically uplifting. It's sad how so many adults can abuse or sexually exploit children and show absolutely no concern for their well being. So many kids, especially young girls, are in desperate need of an adult mentor and protector, if not just a kind word to show someone cares. There is truly no greater purpose or privilege than being a father who is present. To think this was Sami Gayle's first major film role is mind-numbing. Both Sami and Adrien were fantastic, but the adult nature of these scenes just crushed me because I have a teenage daughter and I'd be devastated if she became a prostitute and was harmed in any way. I was initially very uncomfortable seeing such a young actress playing a role defined by such mature, dark themes. However, the more I thought about it, I realized this is the world we live in and Sami embodied both that youthful defiance and deep-seated longing for a genuine connection amid the horrific tribulations of her life. That dynamic, combined with his childhood trauma, inevitably worked to help them both bond and heal. See more Read all reviews
