Critic Reviews for Don Juan DeMarco
The film has its slow patches, and its fragile illusion probably doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. But, mostly, it dances on a very fine knife's edge between charm and absurdity, an irresistible paean to the art of kiss-kiss.April 25, 2019 | Full Review…
The movie itself is never as good as it should be, owing to Leven's lifeless staging.
For the film to work, we'd have to be in denial... and it's just not magical enough for that.
Brando doesn't so much walk through this movie as coast, in a gassy, self-indulgent performance no one else could have gotten away with.March 4, 2019 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…
The movie, written and directed by Jeremy Leven, may not be one for the ages, but it's a pleasant, involving experience that intermixes fairy-tale romance with modern, deadpan comedy.
Though the material is thin, the actors do seem to be getting a kick out of playing off each other.
Audience Reviews for Don Juan DeMarco
Aug 26, 2011Marlon Brando seems miscast in this film but this is compensated by a passionate Johnny Depp, who shines as an incurable, eternal romantic. A refreshing story about love and romance, and the main song will be stuck in your head for quite a while after the movie is over.Carlos M Super Reviewer
Jul 05, 2011Starring Johnny Depp as John Arnold DeMarco, a man who believes himself to be Don Juan, the greatest lover in the world. Clad in a cape and domino mask, DeMarco undergoes psychiatric treatment with Marlon Brando's character, Dr. Jack Mickler, to cure him of his apparent delusion. But the psychiatric sessions have an unexpected effect on the psychiatric staff, some of whom find themselves inspired by DeMarco's delusion; the most profoundly affected is Dr. Mickler himself, who rekindles the romance in his complacent marriage. The movie is based on two different sources; the modern-day story is based on director/screenwriter Jeremy Leven's short story Don Juan DeMarco and the Centerfold (the movie's original title before the studio changed it shortly before release), while the flashbacks depicting DeMarco's back-story are based on the more familiar legend of Don Juan, especially as told by Lord Byron in his version of the legend.Very romantic movie with great performance by Marlon Brando and exquisit theme music.Really a surprise for me.Andre T Super Reviewer
Sep 06, 2010So, Depp plays a Don Juan, a womanizer, who's overly romantic, just what every one of his fans wishes he was like... And that's it, there's nothing more to it, really. Not being a big fan of his, I was just really annoyed by this.Aj V Super Reviewer
