Even more so for Diaz, although she was fine and doesn't deserve all the grief she catches for this role. It's strange...if you say the Godfather movies or Casino or Goodfellas are classics and name one as your all-time favorite, no one bats an eye. But if you tell anyone that you love the movie where Bill the Butcher takes a long knife, stabs a pig carcass hanging on a meat hook several times, and declares to his new young friend "That's a kill" after each violent thrust, those folks get all nervous and start edging towards the door. To call ‘GoNY’ Scorsese's BEST work is pure sacrilege. While it's set in the city he loves, the purity of his work is stilted. This is not the soul-laid-bare character study of 'Raging Bull' or even the Masterclass Stylings of 'Goodfellas'. But what this is, in my opinion (which is what humbly makes it my FAVOURITE Scorsese film) is one of the greatest examples of storytelling on a vast scale. As conventional as the narrative is, the flare and utter perfection in the details of its setting and the journey of its characters are some of the best work I've ever seen. This is a living, breathing, bloody, sweat dripped creation and you can feel it. Very, VERY few films can really say that, especially ones that come out of the 21st Century. The set of ‘GoNY’ is so grand and alive, you could pick any person out in the 5 points and make a movie out of their story. See more Plant P @Plantpot Jan 17 I never had any interest in watching this until I recently discovered that being high enables me to see through the movie magic facade of films. I decided to test this on GONY. It held up quite well. The flashbacks to people from when Leo was a kid, just to remind me of who they were, broke immersion though. It's the director saying, "see this guy? Well he was this guy earlier, just so you know". It's also one of those unique films where every actor in Hollywood was probably begging to be in it cos it's a "serious" drama film. This led to what it always leads to: every famous face you recognise trying to do their serious acting by speaking in a shitty foreign accent. No matter how much you try to sound Irish I still see John c mcginley or Cameron Diaz. Acting is not just an accent change. I never gave a shit about DDL, I always thought he was over hyped, but he was the only one who convinced me he could really act. Even while high I could only see his character, not DDL. Good job.
