Movie Info

The early development of jazz drummer Gene Krupa is chronicled in this somewhat fictionalized musical biography. Rejecting his father's plan for him to join the priesthood, Krupa instead embraces music, where he wins fame -- and experiences its dark side, including drug addiction.

Audience Reviews for The Gene Krupa Story

★★1/2 (out of four) Sal Mineo gives an energetic and winning performance as Gene Krupa. There are some great moments in the film, mostly including the live musical performances, but the rest of the film is just okay and not up to Mineo's vitality. Gene Krupa was the legendary musician, most notable as a drummer. As he grows up he longs to be a drummer, but his father wants him to become a priest. He, of course, chooses the life of a musician which opens the door to substance abuse. The film does add some fiction in the works, including a romance with Yvonne Craig. When Mineo is drumming on stage he embodies the great Gene Krupa, but off the stage it never quite connects. [IMG][/IMG]
