Glenrothan is a story of family, forgiveness, and the possibility of healing. Set in the Scottish Highlands, two headstrong brothers (Alan Cumming and Brian Cox), are brought together at the country home of their 200-year-old family whiskey distillery after being estranged for almost 40 years.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

An overwritten and emotionally inert misfire, Glenrothan waste its cast and premise on contrived storytelling, tonal misjudgments, and a surprisingly clumsy directorial effort from Brian Cox.

Glenrothan strives for the wistful charm of a Local Hero but falls flat, and it pains me to say that about anything Scots-brewed. Go to Full Review

...virtually every scene feels awkwardly pieced together, with jolly folk music used as an all-purpose adhesive: there’s no evidence that cinema is a language Cox naturally thinks in. Go to Full Review

A charming, very well-acted comedy-drama...In his first directorial venture, veteran Brian Cox - one of the best, most versatile character actors on Earth - elicits very high-grade performances from his A-list cast. Go to Full Review

Ed K @RT56826367 1d This movie was fabulous. The plot was very clever and the outdoor scene's were extremely pleasant. Don't get me started about the acting. Superb! Couldn't stop talking about this movie. Such a delight. It certainly made you laugh and at times tugged the heart strings. A movie that had the essence of normal family situations Well done. Ed Kryskow. See more David C @David15011955 2d The plot was really good. The scenery was beautiful. The acting was amazing. It was funny in places, were the audience nearly all laughed, and really serious in many places too. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. Strongly recommended for a mature audience with life experience. See more Geoff R @RT50263052 2d Stunning scenery and strong acting performances. Enjoyable and engaging movie with some subtle early laughs See more Helen L @HelgaBabette 4d I loved this easy to watch feel good movie! The scenery and cinematography were beautifully shot. Complicated family relationships probably resonate with a lot of people. But at the end of the movie I just wanted to be in the Highlands drinking a dram! See more Garry B @RT57694310 6d If you want a film full of predictable cliches, then this is the one for you. Was so hopeful but my pringles were much more entertaining than this rubbish. The cast and theme (I'm a Scot) got me there but oh dear ... you could feel the 'setup' of each scene as it was so contrived and fake. I'd say to the cast 'don't give up your day jobs', but I think this is their day job!! See more Lynn C @RT19810226 Jun 21 Three of us went along with no expectations and came away saying one of the best movies we’ve seen in ages! Excellent acting, lovely Scottish scenery, a story that will resonate with a lot of families and wonderful music. See more Read all reviews
