Kevin Williamson, whom we know from writing much of the Scream franchise and directing its latest entry, also wrote this film. And it’s fine. It’s not anywhere near as iconic or well-rounded as Scream (1996), and it’s much more straight-forward in its approach with everything. But it was enjoyable enough and somehow felt nostalgic even though I didn’t grow up in the 90s. Basically, a generic slasher elevated by the era. It's not just a killer after as many people as he can get, it's a killer after a specific group of people because they did something wrong. This leads him to kill more people in his path and in his way of the main group. It's a cool, inventive, and original way to make a slasher horror movie. I also thought that since the cast of characters was small, all of them felt very fleshed out, interesting, and likable. None of the characters got on my nerves and I found each character's point of view interesting. I also love that this movie is a product of its time. I love the late 90s/early 2000s vibes. In this case, the fact that it's old adds to my enjoyment of the movie. Overall, this is a fun slasher film that does something unique and cool with the genre. But what really got me was that it did not follow the story line at all that was originally in the book, it was like a completely different story. I do not recommend this movie if you have read the book, it is a real disappointment if you have. For the people who like slasher movies than good this is perfect for you, the actors are great. But the original story was NOT a slasher film. My advice is to read the book first.
