Movie Info

A self-referential comedy that serves as prolific Japanese filmmaker Takeshi "Beat" Kitano's latest attempt at "creative destruction" (that process was set into motion with the release of 2005's Takeshis), Kantoku Banzai! follows an ageing filmmaker (Kitano) who is eager to revive his failing career. Realizing that he has taken to falling back on familiar clichés, the weary director experiments with producing everything from an Ozu-inspired home drama to an ultra-commercial J-horror film - all with varying degrees of failure. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Sci-Fi part is absurdly hilarious. To me, the rest of the movie seemed just Kitano's excuse to make that ¿story? a film. Anyways, he manages to parody himself and the commercial cinema better than in Takeshis'. Not as in Zatoichi, of course.

This is two different movies in one. The first part was so good I didn't want it to end, but in the second part I couldn't wait for it to end. The first part was like a spoof movie, Kitano is the director who is looking for a new genre to direct his new film, he tries everything but fails in the end. Kitano makes fun of all the stereotypes in this first half, even makes fun of his own movies and this is hilarious, it's very fun to watch for all the Kitano lovers and cinema lovers. He tries to tell these stories in different genres in the first part but fails to go on, then he chooses to continue with one story and keeps going until the end which I can say was not a good choise. The start of the last story, the fight in the restaurant was hilarious but after that the story goes nowhere. After Zatoichi (He is talking about a Zatoichi 2 in the movie), with Takeshis, Kitano moved away from the mainstream. Now, after this one, we can see he has problems about artistic creativity. But the thing is, even if the stories were common in his previous movies, his movies stood out with his style and we want this back.
