Benjamin Fiedler (Daryl Sabara) has a lot to be nervous about; his bar mitzvah is fast approaching, and his parents (Jeremy Piven, Jami Gertz) are caught up in plans to make his party even more lavish than the one the Steins threw for their son. Amid his family's debate over whether to invite an estranged grandfather (Garry Marshall), the youth solves the problem by arranging for Grandpa to arrive two weeks early.

I would compare this movie to garbage, but that wouldn't be entirely accurate...both are stinky and useless, but garbage has substance. "Keeping Up with the Steins", a completely unfunny comedy with a wasted cast of talented actors, is just...nothing.

This was a great coming of age movie that was funny, value oriented and even brought a tear to my eye. This was a fine piece of storytelling and a great find.

Talk about obscure. I saw this one sunday afternoon with about three other people in the theater with me. It's an interesting take on Judaism in America and the pomp and circumstance that comes with one's bar mitzvah. But it could've honestly been a lot better. It's about as cliched a movie as you could possibly get, right down to the obligatory musical guest appearance by Neil Diamond. In terms of an Ethnic comedy, It never comes close to the brilliance of "Moonstruck"... hell.. not even "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".
