Jacob B @RT89309114 Nov 15 Wait, was this CGI short film from the stop-motion masters Laika attached with the Coraline DVD? How have I never heard of this short film until I was, to paraphrase vintage meme slang, yesterday years old? Why does Laika's other CGI short Moongirl get a Wikipedia page but I had to browse TV Tropes to learn that this was a short which originated from a cancelled feature film after Laika decided to focus solely on stop-motion animation? This is a cute, mildly amusing short. It's nothing special but it does have a couple of funny gags. I found the animation quality to be rather underwhelming, to the point that it comes off as inadvertently vindicating Laika for their focus on stop-motion. I think this works better as a glorified teaser trailer for a nonexistent film than as a fully fledged short film like what you'd see at Pixar since the premise seems like something that’s begging to be expanded on in a feature film. Hmm, maybe four stars is a bit too generous for this review but I think I'm just happy I got to get something from Laika I've never seen before while I'm waiting for that new movie of theirs to come out. To say nothing of how they've spent the last couple of years dormant after the massive flop that was Missing Link and a global pandemic making it damn near impossible to even work on another project, given the hand-crafted nature of this kind of animation.
