Crichton’s stellar heist caper presents Holland’s crime as a belated attempt at self-actualization by a man who’s lived his life to this point passively. Go to Full Review

Alec Guinness is delightfully dry as the thinking worm and Stanley Holloway a perfect foil as the blustery geegaw manufacturer. Go to Full Review

It’s a very breezy, casually funny caper that revels in how paper-thin the characters’ motivations are. Go to Full Review

Like a lesser Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Lavendar Hill Mob is lightly class-conscious about the desperation for money in post-war Britain, relies heavily on the immensely talented Guinness’s performance, is queer-coded, and a highly amusing caper. Go to Full Review

Matthew D @OceanSage 1d Alec Guinness leads a rowdy group of potential gold thieves in a hilarious comedy! Director Charles Crichton’s British comedy The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) is a pleasant and easy watch. Quick jokes come fast along a complex gold robbery. I love that Crichton shows the crooks meeting, planning the robbery, executing the robbery, the police trying to find them, and smuggling the gold out of the country. It’s very amusing with four fun main characters in The Lavender Hill Mob. Writer T. E. B. Clarke’s incredibly clever script is full of funny anecdotes, quotes, and robbery schemes. Alec Guinness’ unassuming criminal mastermind Henry Holland is a blast to watch. His leader Dutch is smart with a complicated scheme and silly remarks. Stanley Holloway’s amiable art counterfeiter Alfred Pendlebury is a delight. In all, it’s a short 78 minutes of funny jokes and exciting chases. Alec is okay in it but there are many better films he is in. Meh, okay but nothing special. See more Read all reviews
