The Low Down (2001)

Critic Consensus: Jamie Thraves' debut film about British twenty-somethings effectively captures the nuances of its characters.

Movie Info

Frank is a restless young man in his late twenties whose life revolves around friends and work. Although he is aware of the need to shift his life into a higher gear, he's not sure how to do it. His indecision becomes more acute when he meets Ruby, whose optimistic and fresh approach to life and its problems has a dramatic effect on him.

Has an aura of honest observation that engages even when almost nothing is happening on-screen.

Thraves lets his story drag as if aimless drama will somehow reflect the aimlessness of his characters' lives. It doesn't; it simply bores.

Has such a prosaic, straightforward approach, it's sublime.

Yes, this is another English dramedy about the demands of friendship, but it's in a far more realist key than the posh, slick Hugh Grant films.

One of the most aimless, hard-to-follow films I've seen in a long time.
