The natural lighting and grounded camera work give it a raw, honest feel, and made me really feel like I was there. The pacing is slow at points and the story can be a bit vague, but I felt like it did all come together for me. It’s not perfect, but it’s clearly made with care. The setting is gorgeous and stunts look very convincing, which is not something I was really expecting from a lower budget indie movie. If you're expecting A list quality across the board, this isn't a movie you should watch, but if you appreciate indie creators doing a lot with a little, it's definitely worth the watch. With what I'm sure is a shoestring budget, the crew managed to make a nice looking movie outside of Hollywood that isn't anywhere near the worst thing you'll ever watch. The cinematography is nicely shot and beautiful to look upon. Really made me want to visit Idaho - which is impressive because who wants to just visit Idaho? The overall story is solid. It is set in a semi-post apocalyptic world but you don't really get that vibe from the film itself outside of particular story elements and dialogue. There were some parts of the movie that just didn't make sense for some characters. Now, these character choices didn't really change the overall trajectory of the story, so they can be easily overlooked, but they will leave you with a scrunched brow for a moment. The characters are pretty one-dimensional, other than Allison, played by Kathryn Sokol. They're an abundance of tropes and cliches: Ex-military man is big and tough and won't comply. Bad Guy is Bad because he's bad and wants power. This isn't a dealbreaker by any means. Characters are the hardest thing to write in a movie. The acting is about what you'd expect from a movie like this, with the standout being Kathryn Sokol by a mile. The dialogue isn't always easy to work with for this film but she pulls out everything she can from the script and shows some real flashes of talent. The leading man, Robert Schumacher, is passable, as is the rest of the cast. I can't say that any of them are straight up "bad" but definitely subpar. Schumacher has his moments though. Some of his lines come off very naturally, but when his character, Hey, goes into his "tough guy" routine, it comes across in a weird way. It's a slow burn drama, with elements of a thriller film.
