Geoff Brown The Times (UK) 06/21/2023
Kiarostami's recent films take an oblique approach to moral problems. Here he stares head-on, capturing human drama in street scenes crammed with the kind of raw poetry that directors from the pampered West seem to have lost sigh of. Go to Full Review

Kiarostami's patient, detailed, and wry attention to the infinitesimal practicalities of daily life yields a deep critical cross-section of Iranian society. Go to Full Review

It's a fine example of how truthful cinema can be when it rejects melodrama and empty gesture in order to concentrate on the bare essentials of character and plot. It's sweetly observed, morally coherent, utterly simple and fiercely economical. Go to Full Review

Laura B @LauraBR Apr 14 As already happens in Kiarostami's previous films, 'The Traveler' constitutes a lesson in life and growth for its protagonist. A kind of initiatory journey in which the young man must overcome the various obstacles that arise to face the final test, in this case, the nightmare he has while taking a nap before the start of the match. By falling asleep, Ghasem misses the match and does not achieve his final goal. However, this does not matter since the adventure he experienced, from leaving the Malayer region to travel to the capital, has offered him a valuable life experience. See more 08/03/2012 Kiarostami really was one of the best directors around forty years ago, and still is. See more 11/21/2011 Don't believe the 2011 date listed on Flixster for this. 1974 is a bit more accurate. The Traveler is rough, but identifiably Kiarostami. The acting is... well, pedestrian, but I'm guessing no one featured in this has acted before or since and, as such, lends an air of authenticity to the story. Speaking of the story, there is something satisfying about the whole "troubled-kid-steals-cons-and-pawns-his-way-to-a-soccer-event" and its ensuing can-see-it-coming-a-mile-away conclusion. As a bonus feature on Criterion's blu-ray release of Close-Up, I actually found this to be the more interesting film of the two. See more 11/19/2011 Early film from Kiarostami, obviously influenced by "The 400 Blows"--and the end result is even better. Beautiful film. See more 10/01/2011 Actually from 1974, this is considered by Kiarostami to be his first proper feature: A neo-realist tale of a neglected boy (in pre-revolutionary Iran) who wants to go to a big soccer match in Tehran, but needs money to do so. The boy is like 10 years old, so this is quite an adventure, and involves numerous transgressions (creating suspense about what will happen both in the near future and to this boy as he grows up). Foreshadows some of Kiarostami's themes and mature style. See more 05/11/2011 Kiarostami is the living proof of my theory that Great Directors are essentially great photographers. I'm also impressed with his ability to handle a set that has over 100 children in it. He commands both his camera and his cast beautifully. See more Read all reviews
