Animal Kingdom does everything else well enough, and uses [Ellen Barkin's] shrewd, assessing eyes and unmannered delivery perfectly.

As someone who distrusts the antiheroic attitude, and movies and TV shows in which people who are up to no good are made extra-glamorous... I take more convincing than some. But I went with this.

Adapted from the arresting 2010 Australian thriller, the series contains glimpses of the gritty, compelling series it could be, but judged on its first three episodes, this tale of a dysfunctional Southern California crime family is more bark than bite.

As gritty, dysfunctional family, crime-fueled dramas go, Animal Kingdom roars with dark promise.

It's the one step forward, two steps back approach to greater representation.

The overall pace starts to get stalled in neutral or first gear at best. And some of the storytelling can be disjointed.

In Animal Kingdom, the television action is much more exciting than the austere realization of the original feature film. [Full Review in Spanish]

If you want to be intrigued by a working-class crime family filled with pretty people and petty deeds, Animal Kingdom is the imperfect, but entertaining summer offering you need in your life.
June 15, 2017
There's nothing particularly fresh or insightful here about the volatile culture of macho posturing and career crime but it's a gritty crime show in the bright California sun filled with violence and sex and reckless, raw characters...

Despite featuring a cast of mostly unknowns and being developed from foreign-produced source material, the show managed to suck viewers in... with slick production values, fine performances, taut direction and a tension-filled narrative throughline.

There's enough here to get excited about, I think.

The thing is, we have to like the baddies. Maybe you'll dig the Codys. I didn't.

Overall, I'd say Animal Kingdom is an entertaining show that knows what it is, and it works well as a summer show.

Ellen Barkin hasn't been particularly well used since her early films, but now she may have found a role well suited for her.
June 14, 2016
Animal Kingdom's most promising development isn't the Codys' disintegration, but how the family came to be who they are under Smurf's tutelage and iron control.
June 14, 2016
Kingdom is at its best in depicting the various battles of will and power plays that escalate when the Codys take in moody teenage nephew Joshua.
June 14, 2016
Fagin and his gang of pickpockets had nothing on Janine "Smurf" Cody and her boys.
June 14, 2016
Great shows don't have to be this eager and this sloppy and this obvious.

It's a hollow Twinkie meant to make surfer dudes shout "cool!" at their oversized TV screens. For everyone else, Animal Kingdom is a pretty nondescript pass.

Animal Kingdom bites hard and doesn't let up.

Animal Kingdom could...hold sway over its audience, as long as it plays to the strengths of its cast.

In the course of the drama's first three episodes, it becomes more and more apparent that, despite its characters' shady pasts and dicey decisions, the show is, on the whole, fairly predictable and even conventional.
June 13, 2016
If the series can maintain the momentum of its early episodes, this looks like a wave worth catching.
