The scriptwriters nearly derailed things in the 1st series by piling too much storyline on to the central characters. IVF, miscarriage, ex fiancé on scene, breakup and reuniting was just too much and Martha’s storyline bore the full unrelenting weight of this and packed it all in when just one issue alone, would have filled a series and saved the next issue for subsequent ones.I think that was unfair of the writers to dump all that on the actress at once because at least Humph had his sleuthing to counterbalance it. If Sally Bretton wasn’t such a good actress I think the audience might have given up but she’s just brilliant. It was a deft try at balancing poignant and bitter sweet with the comedy but writers almost wrecked things by this overloading. Therefore it is a testament to the actors that they pulled it off and still made us want to watch. This is because the crime solving is addictive and well written and the actors make their parts characters so lovable. Humphrey is adorable. Martha is just lovely, Kelby hilarious and sweet, Ester smart and kind, Anne funny and wise yet vulnerable, Margo wisecracking with a heart of gold and a supporting cast who have been brilliant particularly the superintendent Charlie Woods who practically steals the show in her short scenes and the hilarious Josh and his misdemeanors. It has survived to a second series which is settling down to become a classic if the script writers calm down and give it the space it needs. See more Read all reviews
